Resting Heart Rate

Postby Michelle » Mon May 26, 2008 11:45 am

Another topic for discussion.....

Clocked mine at 36 bpm this morning

Although it seemed to prefer to bumble around at the 40 mark.

Should I be worried?

Method of measurement was - lie in bed not thinking of racing or La Marmotte, Keith brought me a cup of tea and the monitor and I just relaxed for 10 mins and looked at the readings.

Cool!!!If your resting heart rate is falling thats a good indication that you're getting fitter assuming you're not taking betablocker or some other drug that has a similar effect. Just make sure you warn any doctors you're a 'competitive cyclist' if you need to stay in hospital otherwise 36BPMs may have them panicking. A better indicator of fitness is how quickly your heart rate returns to normal levels after a highly intensive exercise period. So next time you blast up a climb take note of how quickly your heart rate gets down to around 70% of your max. :D

Ok. Remember the resting hr being at 52 previously, can't remember when - about 9- 12 months back.

Toks, you will know this.

How are you supposed to measure your hr after doing severe sprinting or intervals or whatever? Should you stop what you are doing immediately after the sprint, get off the bike and relax to see how fast you can bring the hr down?

Or should you freewheel then carry on cycling doing an easy spin?

Someone once told me that you should not stop immediately after a big effort, it was really bad for you....don't know why though.

Er if you're trying to see how quickly your heart rate falls I'd start measurement as soon as you've finished the intensive effort (got to the top of box hill etc). Just spin along easily rather than stopping.

Mines 39bpm at rest.

I had an operation last monday, and every nurse at mayday that did my rates/pressure paniced, despite me saying i cycle, alot...!

The only person who said it was normal was the anethnatist. However one nurse commented i was obviously fitter than i looked...?! i took it as a compliment, the cheeky mare!

Being dehydrated can also cause you to have a lower resting hear rate than normal.

Outstanding - once you've recovered from your op, get out there and let the Boardman loose..... :D
