Marshalling - Latest News

Postby Snoop Doug » Fri Apr 18, 2008 7:27 am

Hi all - this is in the process of being mailed out to everyone:

Thanks to everyone who has helped out at an event thus far, and to those who have already committed to do so through the year.

We have our Open 25 mile time trial on April 27th and we still need a few more helpers for this. Please let me know if you can help.

Below is a list of races we need to cover and how many helpers we still need. If you have not yet put your hand up to cover off your commitment please take a look at the schedule and let me know when you would like to help. The race organiser will contact you nearer the time with full details. Remember helpers are allocated on a first come first served basis so if you would prefer to choose your slot rather than have one allocated to you then get in quick!!

ACC Open 25, 27th April, first rider off at 6.30 am, 6 helpers needed
Crystal Palace, 29th April, first race at 6pm, 1 helper needed
Surrey League Handicap, 15th May, race starts 7.15pm, 18 helpers needed
Evening 10, 27th May, first rider off at 7.45 pm, 4 helpers needed
SCCU 10, 31st May, fully covered
Evening 10, 10th June, first rider off at 7.45 pm, 4 helpers needed
Evening 10, 24th June, first rider off at 7.45 pm, 4 helpers needed
SCCU 50, 29th June, first rider off at 6 am, 1 helper needed
Evening 10, 8th July, first rider off at 7.45 pm, 4 helpers needed
SCCU Road Race, 20th July, race starts 1pm, 2 helpers needed
Evening 10, 22nd July, first rider off at 7.45 pm, 4 helpers needed
SCCU 100, 27th July, first rider off at 6 am, 2 helpers needed
ACC Open 10, 6th September, first rider off at 2pm, 15 helpers needed
SCCU 25, 7th September, fully covered
ACC President’s 10, 13th September, first rider off at 10 am, 5 helpers needed
ACC Hill Climb, 29th September, 2 helpers needed

The helpers are THE most important people on race day – without you the event can’t go ahead. On behalf of Addiscombe Cycling Club thanks again for your support.

How does this system work?
We all had emails demanding that every non-racing member must help at at least two events or be barred from the club. I and others volunteered for dates that suited, expecting to be given more details closer to the event. Having volunteered to help at yesterday's TT, one of the first to do so looking at the below responses to Snoops OP, I heard nothing further, and have volunteered also for the hill climb in September.
If I hear nothing for that event am I expected to have some random date allocated to me to fill my twice a year quota, despite having volunteered for others? I know what my response will be.

I'll tell you how it works - you do your best for the club, thinking "the last thing I wanna do is take time off work/social life/cat in order to stand by the side of the road/track/dual-carriageway for a couple of hours while others have fun racing but hey, I'm a conscientious member, I'll take one for team ACC."

So you turn up early in your yellow bib having spent hours practicing your most supercilious attitude (reserved for motorists who won't heed your red flag), and what happens - it f****ng rains and the thing gets cancelled.

Bad luck you think and sign up for another shot only for the same f*****g thing to happen again. F*** this you think - every time I turn up to marshall it ****** rains and **** the ***** ***ing **** if I'll ****** paperclip a ***** against a ****** trout farm manager. *******ers

That's how it works....

For me anyway :D

I have no problem with an event in which I am helping being cancelled, a quick email or text to save a wasted journey is fine. I do have a problem with volunteering for something, keeping the date free, and nobody telling me whether I am needed or not. That is just discourteous

Oh dear - I take it that has happened to you recently then :( ? Sorry - I can understand your frustration. I'm sure this slip up wasn't intended to be discourteous - just a failure in our set up.

In future I will make sure that when I pass helpers details onto the race organiser that mobile numbers (where provided) are passed on too. That way we can hopefully avoid any future inconvenience. Thanks for making the point - this kind of feedback helps us get better.

Cheers - Snoop
