New bike £1500 - £2k max ?

Postby EdO » Fri May 30, 2008 10:02 am

Good morning everyone.

The wife is away camping with the kids and I have a day off from work  . So today could be the day when I finally get a road bike. :D

I'll be looking to get this on interest free credit (yeah I know) so I can pay it off over time blah blah. Definitely don't want to pay anything over £2000  .

I'm looking at 56cm frame size - tried out Adam's trek Madonne riding round his driveway which felt a good fit.
I prefer shimano to campagnolo groupset and want a carbon frame but other than that I'm pretty open to suggestions.

If anyone has any bike recommendations or shops to look at then please post up.
....and of course yeah. I'd to get everything completed by today so I'm out tomorrow on the club run with new the bike.

My first choice in that budget would have to be Canyon Ultimate CF 7.0 or 8.0 http://www.canyon.com.

In a huge Tour Magazine (German bike mag) test last year the last version of their F10 frame outscored the likes of Pinarello Prince, Look 595 and Felt F1 - in fact ALL the bikes in the test bar the eye-wateringly expensive Storck Fascenario - in all the important categories i.e. weight, stability, lateral stiffness, power transmission etc...and it's fantastic value for money. And if you hold a racing license you can get a hefty discount - something like 20% on framesets and some complete bikes.

It was my top choice until I came across a too-good-to-miss deal on a Scott Addict.

It was actually a private sale, the frameset having originally belonged to a sponsored rider who'd sold it unused (it had been built up but never ridden) to a mate, who then realised it was the wrong size for him. I took it off his hands for around half the rrp and built it up with Dura Ace and Ritchey WCS finishing kit. It's just awesome 8)

Just got off the phone to Pearons and unfortunately they can't offer any interest free on the Pearson Nuovo.
However they've suggest the Ridley Orion which is £1599.99 which they can offer interest free.
Picture of the old model is here.

Pearson's love the Ridley's. I think all their racers have switched to them. Guy told me that when he first got them in he went for a test ride and couldn't believe how nice it was, immediately built one up for himself. Think they can be quite pricey and the Pearson's own bikes have always had very good reviews. Recommend them as a shop as they are really nice folk, know their stuff, and always happy to help. They won't try and sell you something unsuitable because they want to shift it.

Other option if you have the time is to pop in to GBs and see what they have ready built up and see if any of them fit your bill - style, price, size etc. 10% discount at GBs. Also can get a discount at Pearson's I think, not sure how much and it may be more of a haggle thing on certain bits depending on what their margin on them is.

Have you considered a Lemond Zurich from the mighty Evans:
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70412
nowt to pay for 6 months :D

I have a 2006 Buenos Aires, steel/carbon spine design which is not made any more and it is a great bike. They typically ride slightly bigger than equivalent frame sizes from other manufacturers. eg the 55cm Bianchi I also tried felt a bit cramped compared to my 55cm Lemond.

As a 2007 model it should still carry the lifetime Trek guarantee on the frame.

Best to try a few and see what fits

I'm off down to Pearson at 3 and will probably stop by GBs on the way back.

Evans Waterloo maybe afterwards. Like the look of the Scott CR1 pro / LeMond.

Marco,
At my work they do offer the cycle2work scheme. I've not yet looked into it properly. Just not sure how quickly they can turn it around and would need to find out.
