Carbon gouge

Sniff.
Ok I was trying to cure my creak at the weekend whilst cleaning and took the cranks/chainrings off, cleaned bottom bracket and so on....

On the plus side. Creak gone! woo hoo.

However.... After taking the chainrings off I could now see that there was a gouge in the carbon chainstay behind the chainring. Can't remember doing it but I guess I must have had a bad chainsuck at some point.
It looks like it's just torn into the top couple of layers of fibre and probably looks worse than it is, so I'm going to drop the bike around to Dauphins when I get a chance for a second opinion.

Has anyone else had this happen? Was it repairable? or just something to ignore?
Oh and why on earth don't they have a little plastic bash guard in there like on the top of the chainstay?

This happened to me last year. Sounds almost identical - bad chainsuck followed by scrapeage  :( . It looked terrible. I took the frame back into Pearsons and they did a very nice cosmetic job on it for me. I'm told that the area around the bottom bracket is actually pretty solid and certainly I've had no problems since. Like your idea about a guard though....

Good luck and please let us know what Dauphins say...

Carbon is often repairable. Check these guys out: http://www.carbonology.com. They're pretty helpful on the phone too and may well be able to advise you.

Righty-ho it's dropped off at Dauphins... apparently there was an agreeable lurking in the shop but my wife didn't (/wouldn't) go up and give the secret agreeable handshake. :)

If she took it in yesterday, Weds, lunch time-ish then it was probably me. I even held the door open for her (what a gent) :D I'd just finished riding the Surrey hills route as training for the Dragon next week - and I was just browsing and dreaming of what might be if I had the money

On the carbon subject - my Orbea was damaged by those nice people at easyJet earlier in the year, crack in the diagonal, resulted in a bill of a £grand for a new frame - do you think that would be repairable? have got paid by insurance but could build a trainer or sell for a few quid !!

Andy S - (on the Orbea again at last)

Sounds right, I was talking to her on the phone and asked her to say hello but she woudln't. :)
as for the frame I guess talking to those people Wal linked might be worth a go.

Picked up and all looks fine.... although I've been riding Joey this week and haven't had a chance to play.
They've tidied up the gouge, sealed the scrape and covered it with a plastic bash guard. Commented that it was highly unlikely to cause any problems since I was "such a light rider" :D :D :D made my day!
