Farnham RC 25

Tel, Steve D and I were out for the Agreeables on the Bentley course this afternoon, as well as Jim B and Keith.

First things first. Mrs I needed the car, and I had to shoot after I'd finished. So I don't know how the others got on, and apologies to them for disappearing without taking part in the usual post-ride natter.

I was off at number 51, but was assured by 50 that the numbering was unusual, he was not really a seeded rider and I could expect to catch him by the first turn - an assessment based, I assume, on my athletic demeanour :? rather than actual knowledge of my ability. Off I went into a bit of a headwind and my speedo told me I was down to 15mph, oh, hang on, it's saying 27mph, no, it's 23mph. It was clearly time for (a) a new battery and (b) me to ride according to what my legs, heart and lungs were telling me and to ignore the numbers.

For once, though, the headwind one way did seem to translate into a following breeze going back and I was able to maintain a steady 26mph (or it might have been 14mph or 22 mph) for much of the 7-mile return leg and began to pick off other riders - number 49, number 44, but no sign of my friend number 50. As I approached the final turn though, there he was, coming the other way. Keith, on his first lap, came powering past (who'd have thought, caught by Keith Coffey in a time trial  ), but my minute man was getting closer. Finally, as we crossed the county border (I mention this only because the course description identifies the finish by reference to it) I caught him :) .

I finished in 1:02:19 (the results weren't posted when I left, but I had a peek at the timekeeper's notebook), a PB by more than a minute and a much more satisfactory outcome than my last two forays into the Hampshire countryside. Very pleased with that, not to say relieved that my feeling that I was riding pretty well has finally turned into a half decent result.

Congrats on your pb Mike, I found the headwind really tough and was grovelling for most of the return leg past the start.
Jim Burdett powered past me, he seemed to be going really well, I think he finished with a short 56, how do these guys do it?

Steve Davies continues his very good form with 57.54, he told me at the finish that he wasn`t feeling at his best due to a beer or twothe day before.

Keith Coffey had a mid 53 and he was placed third when I left,

No shows for Hutch or Paul Mill, maybe saving themselves for the National 50 next week.

I think Richard Prebble won with young James Boyman second.

I finished with 1.05:16 which is what I expected, especially as I really struggled into the headwind.

Sorry Terry I didn't realise I went past you. Did I speak to you? If I didn't I was probably oblivious in my own little world of pain. I saw your car in the car park at the end, but didn't see you in the HQ.
I found the course quite hard as it seemed like a lot of uphill on the way south. There were some fast bits the other way though with the tail wind. I think I prefer Broadridge Heath, but maybe that's because I've ridden it more often.

Well done Mike on a less than perfect day. It's a shame you couldn't hang around for a chat.

Terry was right about the grovel into the wind especially the second time. I felt really rough on this section and initially I put it down to spending the whole of Friday afternoon in the pub celebrating my impending retirement, but the consensus at the post race chat (moan?) was that the wind got up later in the event (this was the view of no less an authority than Richard Prebble, off 12 minutes after me I think) so perhaps it was just the effort and adrenaline. In any case I was very pleased with my time which is a season's best :D (I believeTerry was also pretty close to his best).

If only - I am, alas, significantly older than both Glyn and Mr PVT. I'm still retirng relatively early, however.
