Stuck Carbon Seat Post

Postby Michelle » Tue Jun 17, 2008 8:32 am

Anyone got any ideas how to unstick them?

It's on my winter bike, I reckon it must have come off in the last nine months.

And don't tell me to oil it either

As its plastic, a flame thrower applied correctly will heat the frame up at a quicker rate than the seat post -thus expanding the tubing slightly and allowing removal of the post.

This will of course render the frame completely unusable in future, meaning that Keith has to buy you a new winter bike with a powertap on it - everyone's happy :D

What's the frame? if aluminium/steel you should be able to insert a wide flat bladed screwdriver into the slot in the frame where the seat clamp is and twist the screwdriver to open it up to make the fit looser, then just (ha) pull up with all your might (not twisting) you may have success tapping it in ever so slightly with something heavy before pulling it up. If its a carbon frame... do the same just a lot more carefully! :)

Then next time make sure to put carbon anti-slip paste on the pin before inserting it. :D

How expensive is the seatpost? Cut it out if it's wedged solid and not too expensive is probably the easiest way. Added bonus of getting to destroy something which is always good fun :D .

One trick that even the mighty Sheldon missed that works wonders on aluminum posts in steel frames is coca cola. Turn the bike upside down, fill the seat tube with the aforementioned liquid, leave for a week and it will dissolve the corosion (but is a bit messy) .

Sorry, no idea if this works with carbon

A carbon seatpost has been stuck fast in my steel frame for about four years. But it's at the right height for me, so what do I care?

Another trick is to weld over all other orifices on the frame, drill a small hole lower down the seat tube and attach an industrial air hose with about 10,000psi of pressure coming through it.

Make sure the seat tube isn't pointing in the direction of anything valuable (antique furniture, pets, children etc) stand well back, flick the switch and watch that mutha fly out of there

Here's another. Utillise the same principle as an internal combustion engine - ie a small explosive charge in a confined space (ie the seat tube) will create enough pressure to... well you get the picture

How about Elephants - Elephants are really strong and could surely be employed in some fashion to shift it

Michelle, after Huw's helpful suggestions here's one you might like to try. stick the seatpost between Mr. William's legs, saddle at the front pointy bit pointing upwards, then ask Ian or a similarly strong person to hold on to the bike from the other side. Then just entice Mr. M to run away from Huw as hard as he can.

You were so close with this one Mr P.

Too expensive has you have to hire a compressor.

:!: If you all get your heads together........ Huw with closing of thus said orifices, Mr P with the cola, then Huw again with the combustion. The only missing thing to add is......
