New routes to/from Charlwood and longer rides

Postby Amy » Sun Jun 22, 2008 7:06 pm

I was talking to one of the Petes yesterday on the club run who was interested in my longer rides and he suggested that we try and recruit more riders willing to take out some longer rides on a regular basis.

You don't have to be fast - advertise it as your pace or steady whatever - and don't let anyone push you into going faster! It's all about encouraging other riders out other than the neck or nothing brigade onto the many other roads that exist in Surrey and beyond. I'm trying to do more long steady rides to build up my strength - I'll worry about the speed afterwards! They could be on a Sunday rather than a Saturday or go to a cafe other than Charlwood.

I'm thinking about doing the Brighton ride next week (even though I've got to get up for the 50 to marshall the next morning... ok so I volunteered for it) but I think I might do a ride the week after - maybe the Balcombe one again that nobody came on. I'm also thinking of going down Sompting some time and there's the Amberley route too.

and so onto my other idea, I'm thinking about trying some different routes down to Charlwood - I've got a couple of ideas - any one else?

I have a 10 in July and a couple in August that are all on Saturdays so I'll be doing a ride on the Sunday. I'll post up in the week before to see if anyone wants to hook up.

Very early days but I'm thinking of heading out to Hastings on the July one (13th) for a long ride (weather permitting), but this will be at a slower pace (mainly tick-over tempo) and just enjoying it. I don't know a route and won't be plotting one either. I'll be just heading out in a certain direction and trying to follow my nose about. I expect to get lost on numerous occasions but don't care. Will stop in either Hastings or Rye for a bite to eat and then head back in a similarly vague way. Not one for those who like to know it's all been planned out and what comes next, or if you don't have a free day as I expect it'll be a "bit" over 100 miles and take a while.

I was talking to Amy on Saturday.
There are quite a few of us who would welcome the chance to do some different rides on a saturday. For those of us used to riding around the lanes of Surrey, kent and Sussex, doing the same route week after week is rather boring. Obviously, the company is important and it would be great to introduce others to some of the quieter lanes that are on our doorstep.
I was a bit late on saturday and chased for about 15 miles before catching a group. My solitary ride included the A23/M23 junction which I hate. I think we have been very lucky to have avoided an accident here and I think it's madness to go past this busy junction week after week when there are far quieter and more scenic routes available.
I'm happy to lead some rides and I hope that others will come forward to offer too.

Anyone notice that Mr PVT tends to put up some very useful replies - yeah, me neither

If Andrew lets you dictate a route...

How about putting some of your routes on the Routes forum?

Try http://www.mapmyride.com or something similar

That sounds very involved....I'll give it a try when I've got a few minutes spare.

There will be no route to my ride, that's part of the point of it - blind discovery. I don't want to know where I'm going or what's coming next. Bound to come across the odd naff road, but bound to find some good ones too. No time limit, no distance limit.

I'll photocopy a bit of map and make a note of various villages/towns to head roughly towards but how I get to them, if indeed I do as I may end up at a different one, will be part of the enjoyment (for me anyway).

I'll take the magic watch Amy so I can put a link to the route afterwards. It'll probably end up containing quite a bit of meandering and maybe even the odd going round in a circle.

sounds like a great idea, it would be good if there were a few variation availabe for the club run,

i like this site for route planning, for my GPS http://www.routeyou.com/home.en you don't have to click so many points if you close the routing option, click two points and it'll draw a wiggly line in between the two following the road.

Hi Amy and all

We've talked and you know we think it's a really good idea. Despite the fun the same CR every week can be a bit dull. I've been saying for some time now that anyone is welcome to come on a ride with us. Trouble is we tend to take the train out to the countryside and then get riding which doesn't seem to appeal to most Agreeables. I've posted a couple of rides but no one turned up!!

We try to get one CR in a month - rest of the time we ride out on our own (usually Sam, Ritchie and I) down to the coast (Bexhill, Hastings, Eastbourne, Shoreham, Littlehampton) along very quiet country lanes in sussex, surrey, kent - loads of climbing and a lot of fun 13/14 mph - try to do at least 100 kms. :D

I'll look at starting a ride from CSS if that might get more interested and ride down to Pevensey (and perhaps catch a train back???). :?: :?:

It might be an idea to agree and publish a programme of events - 'Alternative CR Rides' - on the Forum does this sound a bit too organised??? (I know I have a tendency to start going into teacher mode so just tell me to stop now!!!)

This has a button to tick that means the line will follow the roads exactly between the points you click - just have to be careful as it may suddenly decide to go off by the main roads but there's a useful undo button too.

What have I said!!!?????

The ride to Pevensey Bay from Charlwood is 90 kms - from my house to Charlwood 45 kms. From Pevensey Bay ride to Uckfield Station = 40 kms. Total 175 kms. A very long and lumpy sportive. I reckon at least 7 hours in the saddle!!!   I would be at my absolute limit.

You Paul could of course ride from Uckfield to home. :D
