You want one of these, but apparently they are like hen's teeth at the moment - about 3 in Europe.

Failing that from previous bad experience what ever you get make sure it has:
A solid reinforced base.
Wheels - Good strong ones that are recessed.
Very well padded straps - once you've got the weight of even a light bike in there it gets very heavy very quickly when you have to carry it.
Ones that have a front fork clamp fitted to the base of the bag are best.

Keith and I just picked up two of the trolley bags from Lakeside Decathlon. Ordered them 6th June, arrived 18th June.

I think they have some more in the warehouse now.

Or just ask your shop of an old cardboard box, they work fine. don't forget to get some fork spacers.

Was with Mr  when he used that bag and I can say it was really easy to use.

Trouble with hard cases is the weight issue, which airlines are starting to catch onto.

I flew with Ryanair and put nearly all my clothes in with the bike, and could hardly lift it up!!!!

I have that dhb bike box from wiggle. It's been abroad about 5 times and has kept my bike nice and safe despite the best efforts of the easyjest/ryanair baggage handlers. Great value at £125. Personally i would always go for a box over a bag for the extra protection. They do end up being damn heavy though, and i have to check it in as sports baggage as opposed to regular baggage so always adds £20 to the cost of the flight.

just checking EJ's site and it appears you can take an absolute maximum of 50kg for all baggage, including sports equipment (for which you play extra as andy says).

i'm sure last year it was 32kg maximum including sports gear, which meant with a downhill-ish MTB in a bag (c. 25kg, road bike in hard bike box would be similar) and another bag (3kg empty) you only had a couple of kilos for clothes, shoes, etc, which meant everyone was wearing as much of their riding clothes as possible on the plane, including fullface helmets, putting pedals in hand luggage, inner tubes in pockets, etc :D

Also, the maximum weight per single item has always been 32kg but there has been talk of it coming right down for H+S reasons - and this is set by governments/EU not airlines. Not sure what happened to this.

When we went to Majorca this year we were only allowed 32kg max per customer- this included the bike as well. Everything was weighed, and for us it was the first time so in the UK.
I have never had a problem with weight (oh yeah) coming home- never weighed, airline staff positively helpful.

Not really on topic i know.... but i had to share...

Sorry, I misread. Once you've paid the fee for your bike, it's 32kg of hold luggage. Over that, pay £6/kg up to an absolute max of 50kg.
