URGENT - BIG Club Run this weekend

Postby huw williams » Tue Jun 24, 2008 3:21 pm

Just in case you haven't noticed the thread entitled: Club Run 28/06 - Coulsdon to Brighton

It's this saturday and it's a repeat of last year's Captain's coastal ride when this happened.

In glorious sunshine thousands of ACC riders descended on the sea front in yellow waves, had a spot of lunch in a very amiable restaurant, then rode back (or got the train in some tired cases).

This saturday we're doing it again. Yes we know it's short notice but free weekends are rarities these days and there's not much happening on this one so the skipper's decided to go for it.

The group splits and start times are forecast to be like this:
8.45 15mph - Direct route via Turners Hill - Tim C
9.00 17 - 18mph - Monty, Alex P
9.15 - (A) Training Group 21mph + via Ashdown Forest - Marek (anything goes)
9.30 - (B) Training Group 19-21mph - Direct route via Turners Hill - Huw (so long as I'm not still partially deaf)
*NB Speeds are based on groups you ride with on the regular CR

But there could easily be more groups if similar numbers as last year turn up.

So whatever your ability there's a ride for you. If you're a newbie/never done it before and are a bit apprehensive/don't know the way, this is your chance to do it with the help of fellow members who'll look after you and show you the route. The only stipulations are that you make sure you're covered in cases of emergency - so carry enough spare tubes, food and drink, money and preferably mobile phones. If you ride both ways, the direct route via ditchling and back via devils dyke normally runs about 104 miles. A train back if required takes about 40mins and costs about £15

Towards the end of this week the respective group leaders will post any extra instructions/route details specific to their groups so watch this space

Any questions? Post 'em here please, and we hope to see as many of you as possible at CSS on Saturday

Yeah it's a shame you two can't make it

No risks though Ant - hand fractures have to be allowed to heal properly or you face years of niggles

Paul - you've probably been to Brighton more times than British Rail this week anyway :D

Yep spot on advice as usual Huw, not worth the risk. I already have problems with my right thumb from a fracture I did years ago so dont want any more pain in my right hand. I'll go pay my parents a visit and get some fishing done I think.

Are you planning one for later in the summer? Last year's was mid August.

Almost certainly there will be more Brighton rides, but at the moment there is nothing on this scale planned. The calendar for sportives, racing, TTs and plain old family holidays means that its getting harder and harder to schedule 'special' club rides during summer, so we just have to accept that not all members will be able to make all rides unfortunately

For info, my ride is likely to be a bit slower than 21mph due to the increased mileage and planned amount of climbing. I am going to be chaperoning a colleague of mine as well who is a bit slower, so we will be going as fast as him. So if you are doing the Marmotte or Etape or just fancy a few more hills then you are welcome to join my group.

Cheers

Marek....

p.s. Also I intend to have a few beers on Friday night.

I mentioned speeds only as a guideline based on the groups people ride with on the regular club run.

It's unlikely that the actual speed on the road will be as high as stated due to a) the extra distance/climbs and b) the absence of Paul Tunnell.

So no-one should be put off by the stated speeds - if you ride with the 17s/18s on regular saturdays - you'll be ok with Alex/Monty's group to Brighton etc

I could be interested in the Ashdown run but couple of Q's.

Are you guys planning on riding back? As I am sat here at my desk then I would want too so will we still be meeting the others on the pier?

Also when you say not 21mph cos of your mate. How fast is he? What speed you thinking?

Cheers

For about five minutes last night, I had a green light for this. Then the phone went, and the lights flickered and changed hue.

If it's anything like last year, it'll be a great day out - I look forward to getting the vicarious enjoyment of reading about it on Monday.

I normally ride with the 18s but sometimes get spat off the back, eg last Saturday I lost Sylvain's group in the Thru and off and going to Box Hill I was the Man in Red that got picked up by John C's and Chloe's group after losing the front group ("mechanical" was the excuse I gave  ).
Does anyone I've ridden with reckon the B training group likely to be a step too far ahead of next Sunday's Etape?

Well Dom. you'll find fellow Etapers Chris L and me in the 19 - 21 group on Saturday, so if you're spat out the back I daresay you'll find Chris and me for company! Huw's advice is that we'll be fine

Anyhow, I was with you last week for the group with Sylv, We were all fine until the thru and off, where frankly we'd have needed to be riding motor bikes to keep up with Sylv last week. I gave up trying when I looked down and saw I was doing 28mph all on my own and couldn't close the gap after being a little slow away from the start at Faygate. I know when to admit defeat! 8)
