Not at all Sean they both work very well, used a combo of both for 3 years. I would expect it could be to do with the ergos more than anything else. They kept the cost down on Xenon and Mirage by not having an indexed left shifter. This probably increases production costs making effectively 2 different types of lever. The sales levels probably don't justify continuing with them as people are going in at Veloce level.

A lot of the budget kit is only done to chuck on pre-built bikes for shops to hit a price-point. With nearly all shops chucking Sora or similar Shi*mano it's a small market. Never understood this as I'd have though a lot of smaller frame sizes (mainly women and short blokes like meself) would benefit from the smaller levers which fit your hand better. They must get the Sora at bargain bin prices to bolt it on everything. I expect big retailers have a say too, Evans don't sell anything Campagnolo which is pathetic from a supposed large retailer who should stock a mixture of components, it's not as though there is dozens of them.

Veloce isn't that expensive and is probably what most people go for apart from the budget end starting out bikes. Yes it now doesn't give a choice, but there was precious little choice anyway as very few retailers didn't just bolt Sora (or next one up) on.

Although Campagnolo are wonderful, warm and fluffy people they are still running a business so if it wasn't getting enough cash through the door...

Campagnolo are a pretty small company (in size, but not statue :D) and more specialised compared to Shimano which turns out millions of bits and pieces for a variety of activities. When you're running off mass market low end stuff this size is always going to help keep the costs down.

I like to think of it as a master carpenter compared to Ikea  .
