Club Dinner Speaker

Postby mrP(Boonen)VT » Tue Jul 01, 2008 9:09 am

As is tradition, at the Annual Club Dinner and Awards Ceremony (17th January 2009 at Selsdon Park Hotel £30 per ticket), after the meal and before the awards, we engage the services of a speaker to entertain us.

We have had all manner of sperakers in the past (some who have been dreadful, others very good) and we would like to know if anyone has any ideas :?:

Cycling related, or not :?:

Paid professional or colleague/friend :?:

Please share your thoughts (no Sean, no lap dancing  )

Dr Micky Ayliffe (Clarencourt rider) who is also a haematologist, apparently is a good speaker, amusing and interesting.

Or there was some guy who did the end-to-end on a recumbent (apparently  ) - can't remember his name but the Kingston Phoenix had him last time I went to their dinner-dance. If I remember rightly he lived up north somewhere and went back home after the meal on his motorcycle :D

I'll share my thoughts. In no uncertain terms do I want my thighs crushed by Sean trying to lap dance. :D

Time for a lie down Ant, I think the sun's getting to you  .

Does Gethin Butler do after dinner speeches? Is he a good speaker? A legend and current LE-JOG record holder (albeit an ex(?) Paragon  ). Did his first marathon this year too....and won it.

Might be a bit pricey but does anyone know if any of the Eurosport crew are any good - David Harman, Mike Smith? I seem to recall Marco saying you had Duffers before, bit past it for commentating but how was he as a speaker? Would probably have to get him to speak before the meal though or we might get 30 minutes talk on the quality of the cheeseboard.

When we had this discussion a while back I think I suggested Jon Snow, Nicholas Crane, and Adam Hart-Davis. All might be a bit pricey though.

As for Sean lap-dancing, no thanks.
But Pole dancing is another matter entirely - step up Mr Siwicki.

Antloony I like your thinking, my £50 is in to watch that if you give them 2 cans each of squirty cream and my phone number :P .

Please feel free to add the event as the cream could run out to quickly, it should at least be an all nighter.

Oh yes, what have you started? May as well have the venue at Spearmint Rhino to keep this lot happy.

[quote="marco"]also weve had gordon macauley before (team mens health) and some other little pro fella from essex way who was actually really really good. maybe theres other current domestic local pros we can get ?

Marco - The general feeling when this has come up in the past is that because so few of the people attending the dinner race at a high level (partners, children and even the majority of riding members) a pro racer is not really a suitable speaker for the event - so for recent dinners we've tried to pick somebody interesting, with a cycling tie-in who isn't a pro racer - hence Tony Bell, David Duffield and Matt Seaton, each of whom was thought to be of sufficient interest to non-racing members yet still retaining a cycling theme to their speeches. (This of course can blow up in your face as with Tony who on taking the microphone forget just about everything he'd ever experienced in cycling and suddenly became Jimmy Tarbuck)

So maybe we begin our search for a guest speaker by first deciding if we want a high-level racer or not
