4 HOUR Coulsdon Brighton Coulsdon

Postby Steve B » Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:58 pm

Ok guy's, is it possible to do a group ride, Coulsdon - Brighton - Coulsdon in 4 hours :o

The route we did on Father's Day which somehow clashed with the official London to Brighton ride  was about 84 miles, meaning that an average of 21mph would be needed, including any stops for re fuelling . Obviously there would be no stopping for a restaurant lunch  , maybe another agreeable could drive down there to meet us, taking supplies of drink and food.

If people think its possible, would there be any takers for giving it a try maybe sometime in Sept/ Oct, on a sat morning in place of the club run, starting at 9.00am, trying to get back for 1.00pm. A group of 10 or so would be good, as there will need to be a lot of work sharing.

Any thoughts :?:

I'd be up for a bit of this, may have to push me up Ditchling though if we go that way. :?

I think US Rob did that a few years ago in a small group.

Why wait till the end of the season though? This ride will improve fitness no doubt about it.

Hmmmm - sounds interesting :) . Would need to iron out a few kinks maybe, can you go round rather than over Ditchling? I'd be up for this, could learn a lot. Realistically I won't be able to fit it in before the SCCU 100 but maybe towards the end of August as a gear up for the SCCU 25 - hey why not..?

I'll watch this space in the hope it happens on a date I can manage

Great idea

I know a flat route that is not the A23!!

I think we could do it, but why  :?: :?: The best bit of a Brighton is eating by the beach. 8)

Was thinking of the Turners Hill, Ditchling route. Back via Paul's preferred A23 - lumpy country lane - A23 route.

Open to suggestions on the date :D

I was just thinking about it yesterday and thought it would be a good challenge.

Maybe define the end in Brighton? Does it have to be the seafront? just thinking of the time that could be lost in the traffic?

seems a bit of a shame to cycle to Brighton and not stay for a few minutes, if the weathe is nice. Why not add in a 20min rest at Brighton only.

It does seem a shame to go all the way to Brighton and not have time for an ice cream/fish and chip dinner/dip in your budgie smugglers 8) .

If you want to ride like that for 4 hours plus, why not just enter the SCCU 100 :D ?

Steve, for a nice different local challenge the Dunich Dynamo is on 19th July, 120 miles to Dunwich overnight from London. I did it one year, a great ride if weather is ok, get there early to beat the queues at the cafe at the end. To make it extra special - cycle back and try round it up to 250miles - beware return is on a Sunday, few country shops open then, especially early in the day.
