MTB Sram X-0 9 speed question

Postby Rob C » Fri Jul 04, 2008 1:42 pm

I got one of these that is beyond repair, can I replace it with a shimano XT 9 speed rear mech or will there be problems?

Cheers,
Rob

A Shimano mech won't be compatible with your SRAM shifters, because the cable pull ratio is different. You'll have to get another SRAM mech (or replace the shifters at the same time).

Cheers Wal, will all Sram 9 speed rear mechs be compatible? The X0 is £150 ish, I want to spend a lot less then that...

Yup, you can use the X-9 - or even the X-7 - mech in place of the X-0.

By the way, what's busted on your X-0 derailleur?

Me!

I turned the bike into a single speed as an emergency get me home measure after the chain snapped. The rear mech then dive bombed into rear wheel and bent the rear dropout so that I can take the drop out from frame but I can't cant seperate rear mech from dropout. Have been to a couple of bike shops for assistance and between me and the bike shops the bolt has now been rounded.

Bet you wish you never asked!

Cheers to Bob and yourself for help with this. I've ordered an X.9 rear mech now so hoep to be out again shortly though the replacement dropout I bought is wrong so will need another attempt at that...

What make of frame is it? Most manufacturers/importers will have replaceable rear mech hangers available for about £10 each. Or, there are specialist manufacturers (such as BETD who will make one-off hangers for unusual frames for a bit more money.

As for the rear mech. You need to replace the X0 with another SRAM one. This is because the SRAM design uses twice the cable pull to move as a Shimano one. That's the bad news. The good news is that this years X9 is identical (except for the decals) the last years X0, but is much more affordable.

It's a cannondale scalpel that's a few years old. The place had 2 or 3 dropouts for older scalpels but didn't mention specific frames so I went on look. I'm hoping to have the bike up and running sometime soon. I've not ridden it in ages...
