Last Chance Saloon for 2008

Postby Snoop Doug » Wed Jul 02, 2008 8:52 pm

OK folks

Just to avoid any doubt, we still have a few fixtures left to fulfil this year. That means we're still shy of a few helpers. Whilst it has been great to see a load of new faces out there in 2008, there are loads of people yet to do their bit, you know who you are.

These are the remaining events:

SCCU Road Race - 20th July pm, 2 helpers required
SCCU 100 TT - 27th July (early start) 2 helpers required
ACC Open 10 TT - 6th Sept pm, approx 4 more helpers required
ACC President's 10 TT 13th Sept, approx 5 helpers required
ACC club road race 20th Sept, approx 6 helpers required

Please note that any unallocated posts left at the end of this coming weekend will be filled by a random draw of all eligible helpers. If such a draw needs to be made then I will publish it. Once you are drawn, if you cannot fulfil the post, you simply need to find a willing club mate to cover for you. Easy!

Remember - if all eligible members volunteered, we'd only need to help out once every couple of years (approx) each. As it is, some of your fellow members have already covered considerably more than their fair share, whilst plenty of folk have never helped despite enjoying the benefits of membership for several years (fantastic organised ride to Brighton just the other week, wasn't it...?). Please take this opportunity to rectify the balance.

Cheers - Snoop

Don't forget the Cyclocross race later in the year (just to put it in people's mind) that is being held at the potential 2012 Olympic MTB venue - PORC 8)

Now someone was telling me they wanted to marshall but hadn't done it before.... Whoever it was, if you haven't put your name down already, get in touch with Doug! Try marshalling at a time trial to begin with :D

Well done Carl - not many slots left for that one now :)

Alex - I will get something out on the cyclo x once I've fulfilled the remaining Summer fixtures - cyclo x will count to next years as it is in November.

Cheers - Snoop

PS - whoever Amy is thinking about - yes please get in touch :D

Ivor and I recently marshalled at the SCCU 50 which quite a few Addies and other known riders were riding. I also happen to know the organiser, Lisa Colombo (a few others might know her too). Each club affiliated to the SCCU provides a marshall or two and this is the result of one club not turning up when they said they would:

[quote]The 50 has turned into a bit of a nightmare. On the day, one club failed to turn up for marshalling - the club that was supposed to be seeing the riders safely through Farthing's Hill southbound, which in itself wasn't too much of a problem (I think!) And I knew that 2 riders had gone off course on the day - one overshot a turn RAB (brainstorm - he did really know where to go!) and the other cut out the small leg round the Broadbridge Heath RAB which meant he was DNF - I spoke to him at the HQ after and he was OK about it - again his own fault: another rider "knowing" where to go and ignoring the marshals.
The bad bit is that one of the girls turned short down that leg, at the Tesco entrance RAB and another one followed her. One of the blokes is also missing from the check at that turn and presumably did the same.
So in addition to that I now need to scrutinise the checks for all the other turns and see who else I can throw out of the result of the event.

Yes, the onus is on the rider to know the course but having a marshall does help (unless you ignore them too!)

True, but I don't know how some went wrong as I saw marshals at all the turning roundabouts and the simple rule is keep going straight on unless someone tells you otherwise. From what I heard 2 who went off course a little bit were Laurence Harding and Steve Dennis who both know the course well, but they finished 1st and 2nd anyway so didn't harm them too much  .
I also saw one bloke go straight on at the Farthing ramp instead of doing the little left leg. Don't know how as there was a marshal at the top pointing left and calling out "stay left" . It was just as I was coming back from the leg so I shouted to him, as did the marshal pointing you back down the ramp, but he just carried on oblivious to everyone - must have really been in the zone  .

Last chance

Still after a couple to help on the SCCU 100, The ACC Open 10 and the ACC Prez 10

Please note I will draw names from the hat tomorrow for all outstanding duties. If you get picked and you are away or can't make it for any reason it falls to you to find a club mate to take your place.

You know if you haven't helped yet - if you don't volunteer and you get picked, please, don't whinge, just do your duty with good grace.

Cheers - Snoop

Going fast - what's left:

SCCU 100 TT - 27th July (first rider at 6am) near Horsham/Cowfold. Probably need to be at the marshal point nr Cowfold by around 8am, finishing by around 11 ish)

ACC President's 10 TT 13th Sept (first rider around 10am) near Dorking. Need to be around by say 9.30 probably done by 11.30 ish

Need two or three for the 100 and three for the Prez 10.
