12 hour TT entries.

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Yeah SCCU 100's the 27th, sent my entry in but you have 'til end of next week at least I think.

Have you checked the Ribble site? If it's only for one or two events then they do some cheaper extensions, and if you get the bars from them too then you'll be over the £50 mark where they give you 10% off (15% this week). I've got some of these to clip on the road bike for the long TTs. Although perhaps a slightly higher position than some I don't want to be too low for that long for the sake of my back. Well made and plenty of adjustment for position.

I'm gonna try borrow the carbon extensions from my workmate, will only have to get some cheap bars then.

Although I am tempted to go back to superlight carbon "classic" ie round bars, as in racing I am always on the drops and don't really use the top;

Is it not recommended at all to clamp extensions to carbon bars?

Don't know as I don't like carbon bars or stems anyway. You do need to clamp the extensions on well to stop them slipping at any point. I do them up to (to quote Nick) "torque setting FT", as in f****** tight. :lol:

I have some excellent carbon bars made by Pro. They have really comfy pads with lots of adjustment options. You would need standard handlebars if you have some then borrow my tri bars for a try out - they are top drawer.

how does the 12 hour tt thing work then? how long's the course? how do they work out how far you got at the 24 hour point?

The course uses a number of circuits during the day, each of which is a known distance. Fast people will go round the circuits more times than slow people, and they work out the distance you've covered by the number of times you've been round the circuits.

The clever bit comes at the end on the finishing circuit. They have several timekeepers on the circuit who are recording the time you go past them. So if you go past one timekeeper when you've been going for 11 hours 58 minutes, and the next timekeeper at 12 hours 2 minutes they estimate that you would have been halfway between them when your 12 hours was up.

aha! basic linear interpolation then. although I can think of several improvements to the system to improve accuracy..... :D

They're pretty darn accurate Ivor, the timekeepers are generally fairly experienced at this sort of thing. Also after 12 hours it's a fair bet you are riding the last couple of minutes at an even pace rather than a flying finish of a 10 :lol: . The most obvious way to get it accurate would be to fit chips but that would increase costs. People will also switch bikes (go from a TT bike to a road bike after say 100 miles or so) and possibly change jerseys depending on weather, or personal choice for comfort if you're surviving rather than racing, so the chip would have to be based on a wrist band or similar.
