Anyone else having lots of punctures at the moment? I've had four since Friday. Two yesterday - on on the way in and one on the way back, both back wheel and in a shelterless part of Richmond Park :cry: - and one today (front wheel) when I was hoping to get at least as far as Clapham to stock back up on inner tubes. Didn't even get to the end of my road.

Maybe my tyres have suddenly come to the end of their working life. It's weird, though - nothing for about six months (the last time we had this conversation - I'm running GP4000Ss) and then four in less than a week.

You tend to get more punctures in the wet (I guess bad stuff sticks to tyres more?)

But I tend to treat a sequence of punctures as a sign that the tyres are wearing out

I got my first puncture for a long while last week and am now officially on "amber alert" for a potential tyre replacement

Yes, all sorts of stuff gets washed into our part of the road, then sticks to the tyre.

Looking at it again, though, I have been commuting on these tyres since January. Although there's no visible sign of wear, I think these four separate incidents are a clear 'red alert' to change my tyres. New ones ordered.

Do you check and de-flint your tyres regularly? After every wet ride I check the tyres and pick all the bits out otherwise you can get a block of punctures as you just keep knocking all the glass etc further in to the tyre.

6 months of commuting is a fair amount of wear though, 4000s are a racing tyre so softer and will cut a bit easier. Do you have a spare set of wheels you use for commuting, if so them probably better sticking something like 4Seasons on them as they have an extra puncture belt.

I always thought stuff came in threes, so if you've had 4 then you probably have to wait for another 2 and then you'll be clear for a couple of years :lol: .

I've got GP4000s on both my Cannondale and my steel bike, and use the latter for commuting - now about 120-150 miles a week. I've now ordered some more GP4000s - how would it be if I cut the outer bits off the old ones and shoved the inner bit inside the new ones as a reinforcement?

:lol: Heavy, and without much room left for an innertube, but I doubt you'd ever get a puncture again. Or if you did you'd probably be completely oblivious to it.

Also, tubes don't like rough edges - so you might puncture from the inside :lol:

No, your best bet is this: drill a second hole for a tube valve (opposite to the existing one), and fit two tubes in your tire. When one punctures, just top up the other one.

I think some downhillers actually do that!

On a slightly more serious note, if it's just for commuting fit some slime tubes. They're heavier but it's a commute, you're not racing around (unlike some urban warriors).

Then again say "sod it", punctures happen and you've probably had your share for a while.

That seems to be the most sensible line - although Sylv's suggestion sounded like genius, I'm just not that kind of boy.

I will henceforth make a point of carrying some baby wipes to clean my hands with. That'll at least spare me the indignity of trying to wash them in a filthy roadside puddle and being snickered at by passers-by. Oh, and avoid answering my mobile mid-fix: yesterday I scrabbled around in my back pockets with blackened hands and ruined a fairly good jersey.

I'm surprised and dismayed to see how a couple of punctures can eat away at my entire sense of security and well-being :shock:

Adrian I hate you - got a puncture this morning, first in weeks, and first at front in months. Front wheel doesn't have ceramic coating, so my rim and then hands were full of nice gunk, luckily my phone didn't rang after that.

And, first of two spare tubes I carry was leaking - obviously only noticed after installing it.

oh, and you also get more ounctures in the wet as the water acts as a lubricant for the cutting, try cutting dry rubber then try again wetting it, a big difference,
