Crystal Palace 8th July 2008

Not a totally unsuccessful night for ACC. Well, finally something to write home about! I finally got in the top 10, came 3rd in the 3/4ths :D :D so a happy Dad, finally able to tell his son some good news.

Anyway, back to the start, turned up at an almost deserted CP, only Steve B and one other (sorry my mind's a blank) from ACC, in the end I think there was just over 40 in the 3/4 and the E/1/2 was so small that we all went together (Sylv, Stu, if you'd turned up you would have got a top 10 as there were less than 10 E/1/2s  ). So as we all went together we were all finishing together after the full 35 laps.

Well for the whole race I stayed up near the front and let the E/1/2s and some 3/4ths do the work. As usual Mr Anne Boorsma made a break, on his own this time as his companion, Felix English, wasn't there. So he went off early and stayed away for the whole race to get a great solo victory.

Most of the bunch stayed together, the pace wasn't too high as the few E/1/2s weren't pushing the pace too much, except for some surges on the hill, which we don't usually get in the 3/4ths. Later on, about half way (?) two guys got away, one an E/1/2 (CC Luton rider) and a 3/4th rider. They put about half a lap on the group and stayed there. On the 5th last lap I was in 2nd position in the bunch and let the front guy take me to the start of the hill, as he started to die, I pulled out and put in a big out of the saddle effort and jumped away front the bunch. I caught the 2 guys and stayed with them to the end, leading out on the last lap from the right hand turn at the top going down the hill (as the pace in the chasing group had picked up and the other 2 seemed to be slowing a bit, I didn't want to get pulled back on the last lap!!) and getting overtaken at the end. But very happy with my 3rd place.

I think Steve might have got some points too but I'll let Steve tell his story.

hey kieran what a result, and what a way to get it, probably the most noble 3rd spot, pulling the break along knowing you would be taken on the line. sounded like a great ride!

Well done Keiran,

I think I should have gone as well, couldn't have been any worse than the TT.

Good job

Interesting how 2 people in the same race see it differently :?

From my point of view I thought the race was faster and harder than usual, definately the most enjoyable thats for sure.

Before the start, I had my eye on this Mr Anne Boorsma as he was the guy who broke away last week and stayed away, so I said to myself that I would go all out to stay where he stayed and went where he went. Mm, easier said than done

With only 6 E12's racing, we all started together, meaning that the full 35laps would be raced by all. Crickey, this was going to be a long night, and probably fast too. And it was. Straight away there were breaks off the front as a couple of E12s tried to get away, or more likely they were testing the water, but I made sure I was at the front end so as not to get caught out. Another few attacks up the hill, but the pack was allert and jumped on to the back quickly, not letting anyone get away. Then 2 got away and I jumped to bridge the small gap. We had about 30m, me, another 3rd cat and an E12? I was blowing from the chase so sat in for abit. Then the E12 guy dissapeared only to be replaced by another. As he got to us, he shouted "come on guy's we've got a gap", but as I looked around I saw this big mass bearing down on us. It was all over soon after but it was a good buzz and I wanted more :D

Then Mr Anne Boorsma(3rd cat, yes 3rd cat  ) and an E12 broke away, and were never seen again. I'd missed the boat, but in all fairness wouldn't have been able to stay with them anyway :( . Ok so they were gone but the rest of us carried on as before, chasing guy's bursting away up the hill and reforming sometime later. Anytime I got to or near the front my legs were tiring, so I kept moving back into the pack to get a rest. I then had a quick chat with Kieran who said he felt good and told me to sit in for a bit. This worked and I then got back up to the sharp end.

For some reason my legs then started to feel good and out of the saddle chases up the hill were fun, and not hell as they usual were, I was enjoying this :D

Not sure when, but another E12 broke away on his own, and then with about 6 or 7 laps to go, a little Columbian guy (3rd cat) made a brake for it up the hill. The bunch reacted as if "oh thats all right he'll be back in a minute". But he wasn't. Then the best bit of the night. Kieran made a fantastic break off the front of the bunch, up the hill with 4.5 laps to go. To be honest I thought he had gone far too early, but no, he obviously felt good so he went for it. I couldn't see if he caught anyone in front of him, but obviously he did - brilliant 8) :D .

So now I'm fighting for 6th overall, 4th in category. The pace eased a touch for a lap or so, but then went ballistic for the last two. I felt good, was in a good position and very confident of my finish. I then somehow found myself on the front with a lap and a half to go, as others peeled away - oops - not good :o . So I did the same and peeled off, rejoining in about 6th. Up the hill for the last time and the usual all out effort from everyone was going on ahead of me, but I felt quite composed. I made sure I was in the right gear and poured on the power - wow, there seemed to be quite a lot of it :D . By the top I was in perfect position for the final run in, which was my best yet. Out of the saddle, I stamped on the pedals and blasted past all 4 guys in front of me, and if I do say so myself, in style

So an Addiscombe 3rd and 4th :D

That's right Tel, he is actually Dutch and tells me that Anne is a common male name in Dutchland. He always makes a point of signing "Mr Anne Boorsma" so there is no confusion.
