Palace 15th July

Recipe for One Exercise in Futility

Take one decidedly average cyclist
Add one pair of heavy legs
Mix with 2 pints of London Pride
Stand back and laugh for half an hour.

After the Rye ride I expected nothing but haven't been to Palace for ages so decided to go and have a ride round just for the fun of it. Stayed with the pack for 7 or 8 laps, slid off (on the hill  ) but carried on and picked a few up, formed a bit of a group but although it had some people working it also had a few doing sod all, then charging up the first bit of the hill, dying, then repeating occasionally. Carried on 'til about half race distance for a bit of a work out then rolled to the side to watch the rest.

Nice to go back to Palace again, an enjoyable evening as ever.

A very good night for some, a bad one for others.

Well here's a report on my first outing at Palace. I wont write to much though for if I do the this damn repport will be longer than I lasted in the race.

I was sh1t.

I lasted all of 7 laps before my hand gave out and my lungs were couging themselves inside out and still are now Im home. I got off to a really bad start, the annoying thing is my bike handling skills are excellent and I pick up so many easy places through the turns, shame I had neither the lungs or legs tonight to keep going, I guess the 210 miles I did at the weekend my have put paid to my legs. I soon found myself dropping back before getting into it and then picked my way back through a few stragglers before I was forced to retire feeling like sh1t. Mr  warned me it was hard work and boy is he right, still, I shall return for more, practice makes perfect and its all good training. The misses got some great pics of the Addiscombe mob though who were out in force tonight, I'll post a few up tomorrow.

Quite a few drama's to report but best to let everyone tell their own story.

Well, my report could be one of those what ifs... In case case what if i didn't puncture? Mike had done a great job of forcing the pace high and stretching out the group, just the way I like it so was happy in the race. Then going around one of the bends my rear wheel skidded and then again on the next bend (the dangerous one!). Emm, never happened before, so pulled over and found I'd a puncture   race over.

One of three punctures ACC experienced last nght, both Mark and Stu also had problems! Maybe my children arer jinxes?

And what a night for it to happen, for the first time in about 2 years I'd brought my children to watch, so dissappointing for them! oh, well they were fairly happy shouting at Ajay, playing in the maze, and taking photos.

A big well done to Hal and Steve for breaking away near the end and getting up high in the placings! Mike, you should have been up there as well!! Way too much work on the front!

Anyway did some turbo this morning instead, not as much fun though, looking forward to next week.

Someone's front wheel touched my rear mech in the launch for the sprint, mech went into my wheel, alloy hanger snapped ok but once home i saw there's a small crack at the carbon dropout where seatstay and chainstay meet.
Into GBs this afternon...

I started near the back and spent a few laps getting up front to find Wal setting a good steady tempo. A number of breaks were going out but there were a lot of strong riders who were working well to reel them back in. We got a bit of a rest when we accidently caught the E12's as they were resting from an breakaway attack.

Back to the riding and more breaks getting reeled back in, I felt we had a good presence at the front of the field and were working well to keep things together.

8 laps to go and a chap in white made a short break while passing some lapped riders and I bridged over to him. We then went head down to stay clear and it seemed to work ok. During this time 3 others bridged including Steve B, some one in blue and mr Corridori. We were holding a gap then mr Corridori attacked very strongly on the climb with 1 1/2 laps to go. None of us went after him as he is strong and had been attacking all race.

We paced round the last lap and then I drove the pace up the climb we could now see mr Corridori on the climb and were closing. We dropped the two other riders in the break and had steve B on the wheel up the climb.

Heads down for the top corner and round to finish, The Shadow came flying past and was closing on mr Corridor.

I got 3rd which was nice :D

Fingers crossed Sylv but the most important thing is you were okay, it could have been nasty with it going suddenly when you were putting down power like that.

Blimey, sounds like a real interesting night, gutted i missed it.! Great work Hal & Steve, awesome riding, great results :D

Sorry to hear about the frame Sylv  although it's got to be better than some cracks in you.

I hope to make an appearance next week if i still have some legs left after Sundays GranFondo.

well last ngiht i was feeling the (joint) best ive ever felt in the e,1,2s.

i got myself up nearer the front after about 5 laps or so and settled in, going with the odd attack, but them not usually coming to much.

at about lap 18 the pace slowed because a break had just been reeled back in, so i made a half hearted attack myself going up the hill....
to my pleasant surprise, when i looked back about 4 guys were coming after me, including toby meadows, john sadler , matt seaton, and another guy from arctic premier team.

i was a bit worried, as i knew if the break stuck i would have to do some work, but i was feeling pretty fresh still, and had not been in the red, even on the attack.

we stayed away a lap and a bit before the bunch got close again and people stopped working.

then the sh!t hit the fan for me

as we were caught, down the finishing straight, i forgot to change down gears going into the hairpin...i realised too late and found i went into it too slowly, and was loosing a bunch of places and about to go off the back, so i took the risk, and pedaled, but clipped the ground badly, skipping my back wheel out.

i kept it under control easy enough, and thought that was the end of it...but just after the right hander after the hairpin i could feel a bump evrytime my wheel went round...so i stuck my arm up, and just as i did my wheel tyre exploded!!! the inner tube getting rapped in the break calipers and all sorts.

luckily i didnt crash and managed to keep it in a straight line onto the grass.

i was so dissapointed, as i thought i could have got some points tonight perhaps, as i was feeling strong, but i guess ill never know :P
theres always next week though!

i felt sorry for all the other acc with problems, especially sylv, as his is an expensive one!!

well done to the acc 3/4s with steve and hal, what a result, and a good race to watch!

I think we should move the clubrun to a Sunday as I always feel great two days after the clubrun and then terrible come raceday on Tuesday.

Turned up nice and early again and topped up my tan as more and more ACC'ers rolled in.

Quite a big field tonight (about 60 - 65 3/4's) of which most was a sea of blue but I think ACC put a reasonable streak of yellow through it especially towards the front of the pack.

The race got underway and I assumed my usual spot at the front of the field. After a lap of two I decided that tonight was my night and went for it and got a gap of about 20 meters. Shortly after this I realised that UI have never finished in the bunch so I stood no chance of maintaining this. It was fun while it lasted.

After about four laps I was being sucked into the bunch and eventually I was spat out the back after 8 laps I think.

At this point I really began to struggle and a large numbe of riders came cruising past me. When Andy G came past I decided that it was time to stop being a lazy ar$e and ride a bit faster. Albeit nicely tucked in behind Andy where I stayed for about four laps when a group of around 8 -10 formed around us. Andy indicated tot he others that we should get a rotation going but this didn't really develo with everyone still sprinting out of the corners and trying to drop one another. Then one guy decided to try to do the hill non-handed.

At this point the 3/4's came past to lap us and we were broken up- thankfully!!!

After they had got clear (i didn't attempt to mingle in amongst them) I started going round with some lass who I would take around the lap untill the hill then she paced me up the hill I would take over at the top and on and on. This was working really well and was enjoying enjoying the little 2up session.

Then on about lap 20 coming down the hill to the blind left before the hill my bike started to wobble badly as though something had come loose. "No". I hear you say. "Mark put this bike together and he is an excellent mechanic and I don't see him tightening something that he fiddled with at CSS every Saturday morning". ;)

I stopped at the foot of the hill and inspected the bike quickly but could find nothing wrong so set off again.

As soon as I did this my front tyre popped and my jaunt was over for another week.

Lots of support by the roadside this week from people who just turned up to watch and from the numerous physical and bike mechanicals.

I think the average for me in the race was just below 22mph so still a little way to go before I am finishing in the bunch me thinks

See you all on Sat or next Tuesday

What an eventful evening. Keith and I were thinking of coming up but ultimately I am too sick ( ) and he left it too late. When he reads this I bet he wishes he had got home earlier.

It all sounds tough, though. Well done to the placed Agreeables.

Decided to give the race a try for the first time last night after riding over at the last minute after bumping into Steve B inside Gb's earlier in the afternoon.

I've only ever watched before so had a good idea what i was letting myself in for. And sure enough i don't think i lasted one full lap with the main bunch!! However i was resigned to this from the start and decide to carry on giving it my best despite the taunts from a group of loved up chavs on the corner just before the tight left hander at the bottom of the hill. What do they know??? ( about bike racing).

Thanks must go to Ajay who appeared like a true clubmate to help me round just as some of the other riders were starting to get dropped off the back. Cheers Ajay it was great to see another Addiscombe rider I could ride with while everyone else was either representing up the front or pulling over after punctures! That bend before the tight left hander must be cursed or the dynamo have been laying their traps again!!!

Proceeded to work well with Ajay and a couple of other female riders ( don't laugh they were really quick, honest!) as a tight little group of four. It seems that i would pull Ajay up the hill and then he would come past along the finishing straight. It was working well like this for several more laps until we must have got separated as one of the larger groups came past and seeing a growing bunch of Addiscombe riders at the start finish line I eventually succumbed and pulled over but could have kept going if I'd realised there were plenty more laps and just needed to rest for a bit and find a couple of other riders I felt i could ride with. Averaged 19.4 which isn't quick enough to keep up really, but got a really good workout and I enjoyed riding at maintaining race pace for a good 41 minutes, with correspondingly high heart rate to prove i was giving it my all!!!

Hope to be back again next week with race license and improved top speed.
Hopefully i'll be abck again next week with an improved top speed to tes

Well I thought last week was good, but tues night was even better :D . I seem to have improved abit recently, meaning that instead of just hanging on with screaming legs for the whole of a race, I'm now able to 'take part', which is sooooooo much better. Its still just as hard but in a different way, as you can choose whether to hurt yourself or not, by riding up at the front. Up until now there's been no option.

A big field again, as the weather was nice, and I started mid bunch with what seemed a good turn out by the Addiscombe as I looked around me. I missed my pedal first time so got swallowed up a bit, but managed to work my way up in to the front third by about lap 2, where I then spotted young master Felix English who has won a few times already this year. He was the one I was going to watch, like a hawk. Sure enough on about lap 10 he made a break (the first of many i might add) halfway up the hill. Another guy went with him, so I decided to join in, partly to see the strength of the youngster, and partly to make him think that someone was going to be on his case straight away, anytime he decided the time was right for a breakaway. We stayed away for a lap or so, but I did no work, I didn't want to stay away, I want it all together please for a last lap burn up :D

Mike was looking extremely strong too and looked to be chomping at the bit on many occasions, dangling himself off the front hoping for someone to join him. "Not me" I said, as it would have been suicide for me to try anything like that  .
More breaks off the front and everytime the bunch was too strong, pulling them back within a lap or so. I was right there everytime and I was loving it :D . A brief period of Addiscombe block out at the front with me Hal and Mike probably looked quite good from a spectators point of view, but clearly this wasn't going to help any of us win. So after plenty of shouting from Adam, walking around the cicuit, urging me to get off the front, I peeled away and sat mid bunch, which unbeknown to me, was now only about 20 strong. We must have spat about 40 odd riders out the back  .

After all the earlier work towards the front, sitting back in was a welcome rest (well, sort of). Problem with this though, was that when anything happened up top, you had to get past more riders if you wanted to join in .

Hal and Mike did a lot of work helping to bring back breakaways all night, and I think that if they weren't there this week, Felix E would probably have stayed away with someone else at some point during the race, so a big chapeau to both of you 8).

Then the break that did stay away, got off the front and I had missed it, damn :o . Hal was there along with two others. The bunch got taken a bit by surprise and I was so annoyed because I could tell this was the one. There were still a few laps to go but the bunch didn't really look like catching the three away. I kept hoping someone would do me a favour, but I was resigned to the fact that I would be sprinting for the minor places again. Thing was, Felix E had missed it too, and so had Mike :o . Everyone seemed to be tiring, but then a few Dulwich guy's (I think) started to increase the pace slightly, and Mike joined in. The breakaway started to looked a little nearer, fantastic, this is good. I felt confident again :D

That quickly subsided as, with 3 laps to go, Felix burst out of the bunch, aiming to bridge the gap across to Hal & co up the road. Big decision time. If he gets across, its curtains for the rest of us, he would help take the group off in to the distance. So what do I do? Go- stay - go- stay. B*11*cks, I have to go. Oh well chaps, here goes nothing , I'll probably blow my legs up, but nothing ventured and all that .

The chase was on. Up ahead, about 60m, I could see the young lad had made it across. Down across the finish line with 2 laps to go I was still 50m back. Around the hairpin, full lean, out of the saddle and push on the pedals, around the right hander - oops that was a bit too quick  , and down the hill at full bore, I need to get on now. Perfect line through the left handers and on to the last left at the bottom of the hill. A nasty pedal scrape on the floor sh1t the life out of me for a second but I was still upright and now at the back of a 5 man breakaway 8) . Was there enough time for me to recover, I hoped so.

As the claxon sounded, I looked around and saw the pack too far back for anyone to catch us, so it was a 1 in 5 chance of a win. It now got a little cagey, no one wanting show their hand. Amazingly I felt fairly good but then, at the bottom of the hill, Felix sprinted, yes sprinted off the front and off in to the distance. Now this is where I made my mistake this week  . I stopped looking at him and just concentrated on the remaining 4 of us. Then halfway up the hill I looked up and realised Felix hadn't got more than 70m ahead and was definately not going away anymore. I started sprinting, taking Hal with me. This was going to be a long sprint. I kept watching Felix and he was coming back to me, but there wasn't enough road left. I was going like a train, Hal was behind me and we were catching him. For one tiny moment I thought I would catch him, but it didn't happen, missing out by about 2 bike lengths. Moral of the story, its never over till its over. I thought it was over when Felix sprinted off, I should have believed

Well done to all the first timers :D . Keep coming back, it does get a little easier  . Mm, maybe not

See you next week
