SCCU 100 course!!!

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

SCCU 100 course!!!

Postby Andrew G » Sun Jul 20, 2008 8:11 pm

Can some kind folk who've done this before reassure me that there are marshals at every turn/change in direction on this one please. Normally I'm happy to remember a course, as they ain't exactly tricky to follow, but having a look at this 100 course if I have to try and remember all that I'll be sticking an OS map in my back pocket!

I've roped the good ol' folks to pass up a change of bidons and a nice bit of grub (save towing a hamper) and having a thunk is the drag up to Southwater the best spot for this? I want about the 50 mile mark and this seems to fit the bill but I'm not sure how practical it is for helpers - parking a car, dodging traffic etc.

Help gratefully received  .

Honest Andy, you have nothing to worry about it is always a well marshalled event. The first two laps are essentially on well Know turf with a bit added on for good measure. Southwater is fine, a number rides have used it in the pass, at least it means you are slow enough for a successful pass up and your tossed Bidons will land on grass and not roll anywhere.

Don't worry about the drink hand-ups, Andrew, from her training gained from following me in the dim and distant past, your Mum is more experienced at this than most people in ACC!

If memory serves, you punctured the last time you rode. 80ish mile mark on the dual carriageway outside Dial Post at which point you DNF`d  Was that the year a member of the Festival stopped off for a cuppa on his way past the HQ?

Almost Rob - I had a very slow puncture - could have changed wheel for the last 20 miles, .but the lure of the HQ.......

Not sure about the Festival rider, but Doug Rollins stopped at a village shop to pick up supplies, and barged his way forward through the queue saying "sorry I'm in a bike race" throwing some cash on the counter and running out

It's very tempting to stop for a bacon sarnie at that cafe on the Henfield road. A great deal of willpower is needed to ride past when you can smell the bacon cooking - especially the second time you ride past.

 That, and the Festival rider, sounds a bit more like me - not sure about running in the shop though, sounds a bit drastic.
Continue on A24 via Hop Oast RBT to Southwater RBT (called Pollardshill) where TURN (30.35mls) (TQ162252) (CHECK). 3rd exit to retrace on A24. REPEAT road section via Clemsfold RBT (37.26mls), Broadfield RBT (47.51 mis) and Southwater RBT (59.30mls).

It's here, on the approach to Hop Oast or Southwater for the second time I was thinking Paul - about 55 miles. My logic being that I can shovel some pheasant and fois grois in while I'm slowly crawling up the drag.

For what it's worth, my 'team' will be at Hop Oast, where I shall be crawling my way up the drag and there's a handy lay-by, Cowfold (which you go through three times, so you can place orders and collect them next time round, and then back at HQ. That seems to have worked in the past - that's 'worked' in the sense that I didn't run out of food and drink, rather than 'worked' in the sense of I did a good time.

I hear there are at least 100 entries for this one, so as well as marshals there will be plenty of helpers to cheer us all on.

Ta Mike, Hop Oast sounds good then and that way our teams can have a chat rather than just lurk about by the side of a dual carriageway on their own waiting for a sweaty man to crawl up to them begging for sustenance.

Oh dear, embarrassing myself in front of an even greater number of people then. Mind you at least it shouldn't be too lonely out on the road with that many going round, Dave P and I might be able to exchange a number of cheery waves again like we did in the 50  .

If we all approach together, it'll be like a tour feed station - mussettes at dawn.....

No start sheets yet?????

You will remember the course - I managed. Though as Rob says there are plenty people out.

Last year I took two 750 ml bottles. One water, one cackberry flavour cack. Plus a go rice fruity bar thing in half in two separate bags. Mrs Snoop handed me two bottles at Bolney (68 mile mark) and I found that worked OK for me. Like Mike, OK in that I had more drink, not OK....well you know. I had to stop for the handover - not coordinated enough. How doable is a moving handover.......oh doctor.

So I took a few sips every 10 mins, alternating bottles. Had my first eat at around 35 miles, the second at around 50 (I think). I tried to snarf a caffeine gel with 10 miles left to go but I had no coordination and my hand just twitched the open sachet all over me gloves.

My shoulder is still buggered so I've done no training since the SCCU 50. I'm waiting for some physio, horrible feeling this may end up being my final event for 2008. The 100 is gonna hurt like hell. Just dose up on the anti inflammatories, slap on the nappy cream and get on down the road. I'm off @ 6.09 - well there's a surprise :D
, one cackberry flavour cack.

Mmmm, sounds lovely.

Bottle handovers on the move are totally doable.
1) Decide on a slowish part of the course for the handover.
2) Take your empty bottle out of the cage with your left hand.
3) Chuck empty bottle onto the verge a few metres before you reach your helper.
4) Helper holds new bottle at arm's length.
5) Helper starts jogging along just before you reach them.
6) Take bottle from helper with left hand and stick it in the cage.

Disclaimer: Of course it can go pear shaped due to various combinations of dropping things, not letting go of things, running people over.

Not got a startsheet yet Snoop.

Good luck with the shoulder sounds a bit of a nuisance, better switch the energy cack in a hand-up bottle to soluble asprin.
