9th October Daren Send off Ride

A Place to idle the day away talking about anything you fancy. Expect to find cycling and non cycling topics inside

Postby siwickm » Wed Oct 06, 2004 5:18 pm

Lets see how it goes on the day. If we all arrange to be at GBs for 8.00am we can work out a route that everyone is happy with and then see how it goes.

Hopefully see as many of you as possible.

Don't worry we will avoid as many of the major roads as possible.

Cheers

The weather for Saturday looks crap. Obviously this could change. Suggest we check by 8.00pm latest tomorrow night and make a call whether to sttill continue. I would hate to turn up at 8am and be the only person there!

Your shout Marek...

(I have had the flu for the past 10 days so dont want to make matters worse if I can avoid it)
Cheers

Weather looks alright now (touch wood) by the forecast on BBC's website. Would like to tag along, but are you sure that this will be a 17mph spin? Not a 20+ mph special tagged with a 17mph label. If it starts going up to eleven, I'll get shelled out the back.

Tim - If the pace starts increasing to 20+, I'll hang back with you. This is supposed to be a social ride, not an eyeballs out training run.
Cheers

I'll be travelling at about 17mph - this is a social event for me.
I'm planning on being there regardless of the weather; I was born waterproof and it will make the bath at the end all the more satisfying.

I'm up for it seeing my dive's been cancelled ( too windy in the Channel ).
I'd also like to stay clear of the A roads and as Steve has said, how about down to Brighton between the A281/A23 ( see his post ) , and back via Barcombe,Danehill, Ardingly. Or , the usual route to Brighton then back via Wineham, Warninglid etc.
Using too much A road means more single file, more traffic and generally a less enjoyable ride. Just my 2p worth.
btw, are you meeting at GB's?

Was an epic ride in terms of distance. I had 220km on the clock when I got in at 5.15pm.

Route down to Eastbourne was good with the exception of the windy bit as we came into town on the dual carriageway.

We split into two groups out of Eastbourne, one group went the short and correct route to Brighton whereas the small group I was with went the wrong and longer way. Never mind. We all met up at the Regency opposite the West pier for pasta and apple pie with custard which was well needed by that time.

Daren, Dave F and myself took the decision not to take the A23 back with some of the others. We went back the scenic route, and via an untold amount of bumps to get back to Coulsdon.

Daren led on the front the whole way back, cheers for the tow mate. Thing is that Daren was stuck in his big ring the whole day, very impressive riding Mr Lowndes.

Cheers

I agree Marek, an impressive ride by Daren on the way back mind you, you did most of the work on the way down.

Very good turnout with approx 16 riders. We stayed together until Eastbourne and then split en route to Brighton. To increase the excitement levels, the group I was in took the Beachy Head route then the A27 to Brighton. Both good suicide options in their own right.

I thought the cafe was a mirage but thankfully it was real. I have been to the Regency cafe in Brighton a few times now when out on the bike and they have always welcomed cyclists. Not the cheapest place on earth but a friendly atmosphere.

I enjoyed the ride right up until Cuckfield where the rolling roads might as well have been 20% climbs. I mentally gave up before my legs did (nothing new there then).

Hope everyone returned home okay.

It would be good to arrange a 80-90mile ride first Saturday of every month, leaving 8.00am and returning around 1.00pm. Is this something anyone else would be interested in? If so we could take turns at organising the route/cafe stops?
Cheers

WELL DONE TO ALL THOSE ON SATURDAY.
Sorry I missed the ride on saturday :( but I am not back on the pedals yet and not only that I still haven't got a bike to ride :( . Still looking too many to choose from and with being at home 24/7 I must have read every bit of detail on everybike and still can't make up my mind!!!!

The skinny one on the giant is Joe, the other one is Peter. Dunno if they're okay (I guess we'll find out on the clubrun Saturday), but I'm not expecting their mugs to be on milk cartons anytime soon.

Great ride by the way. I was fine until that evil approach to Eastbourne at which point I just completely died. So if Rob thinks he's unfit, I don't even register on the scale. Bit miffed that I didn?t have the legs to get to Brighton. Highlight for me was definitely the bone-shaking decent on Titsey hill.

If people are on for longer rides on a first Saturday morning of each month, then sign me up.

Thanks to everyone for making it happen and all the best to Daren back home.

Eastbourne

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Sun Oct 17, 2004 8:48 pm

The skinny one on the giant! I thought you meant me for a minute. The run into Eastbourne was a bit of a slog, the headwind was pretty ferocious(or seemed so to me anyway).
Longer runs on saturday every now and then"ll be good though, long as there's no (or at least not too many) hills or headwinds!
