Track 26th July

Postby Steve B » Sat Jul 26, 2008 9:56 pm

As the weather was good today I decided to go to Herne Hill and have another go on the track. I went thursday night too, riding behind the derny, which was good fun but very fast in the fast group - as Paul will tell you  I'm slightly under geared on my new bike too which meant I was spinning like crazy. Thats ok for a while but takes it toll eventually.

Today was good :D. First we did some training, all going round together (about 60 riders?), then 4 had to race off the front and join on to the back of the main group. I somehow managed to be with 3 fast guys and the chase was full on each time. At the end of that my legs were already sore :? . Next we did about 40? laps of thru&off, with the last 10 very gradually increasing in speed until on the last lap it became a race to the line. I didn't realise about the race finish until the last minute, where I had to make lots of ground down the back straight to get near the front. Didn't quite get a win but I was pleased to be able to compete well :D .

Then we had a 20 minute break. As I was the only Addiscombe there, I felt a little out of place. Wasn't sure if it was me, because I was Addiscombe or just the fact I was new, but there didn't seem to be any atmosphere. I think we need to get a few more of us down there to liven the place up a bit

Finally the races - 2 groups, medium and fast. Couldn't see the point in going in the medium race, might as well jump straight in with the fast boys. 10 laps per race, 3 races per group.
First race was the quickest of all with everyone still fresh-ish. From the start a couple of guys picked up the pace to what seemed impossible to maintain for 10 laps. Each lap someone new came through to keep it fast, and with one and a bit laps to go i found myself on the front. A totally new experience for me,(on the track I mean  ) and one I relished :D . I was in control of the race now. My legs were going round like the clappers, but there was still more in the tank. Down the back straight one guy tried to come past me, but as he got level I pressed on the gas and left him high. I felt like I was watching this race on the telly, it was odd :? I could feel the whole pack breathing down my neck, but I was in control - it was brilliant. Round the final bend and it was now 100% effort to the line. Although I could hear it all going on behind me, I never actually saw anyone, not even a wheel, I'd held them all off, fantastic :D , such a good feeling.

Second and third races weren't as good, only managing 3rd place in each race, still really pleased though :D . In both cases I had to come from behind, too far behind. Will have to learn a bit more about positioning.

It would be really good if we could get more people to have a go at track racing, its really good fun. Hopefully some of you will have a go before the club track champs :D. Ask Mark for details 8)

Steve,
We had 9 riders in the SCCU 100 the next day, and I wouldn't want to do that the day before.

Steve,
Sorry if I wasn't clear - you were undergeared for the derny session, but about right for "normal" HH racing.
