...well, it might have been if i hadn't p*******d with 1km to go! Unfortunately that's a pic of me coming home 30secs behind the bunch after a wheel change
Only half the field decided to turn up this morning, so there were around 35 starters. Things were pretty jumpy from the off with lots of attacks and counter attacks within the first of 8 laps. I bridged up to one of them and soon realised that the legs didn't feel too good Nothing stuck so i decided to sit in and bide my time, hoping that they'd feel better as the race wore on. It was a nice circuit, a 10km loop with a few bumps but nothing where you could really lay down the hurt. On lap 5 things started to heat up a bit with some of the stronger looking guys starting to attack on the rises. I got in with a few of these and made a couple of my own but we were chased down by the bunch every time. Realising it was unlikely anything would stick i decided to sit near the front and mark the stronger guys just in case any splits occurred in the last lap or two if the pace upped. A couple of lone attacks in the last lap came to nothing and with 5km to go I was sat nicely in the top 5, with my beady eye on 2 of the guys who had seemed strongest. With just over 1km to go I was right on their wheel when psssssssst!! (they finished 2nd & 3rd). Effing and blinding i pulled up and got a spare wheel from the service car and pootled my way in, there was no chance of chasing back on so close to the line.
Ah well, there's always next time. C'est la vie
