The photos are excellent, but what stands out for me is the quality of reproduction on a web page. Far better than anything I've seen anywhere else, like a transparency on a light box.

[quote="Sean Hogan - 何祥"]Proper cameras do that matey, not the poxxy kit we're used to using. Probably used a Canon EOS 1D Mark III.

Not just the camera Sean, they come in to there own when you are developing the picture for viewing/displaying live. You can't put the original RAW files up on the web as they are so huge.

Roberto Bettini etc's photos on cyclingnews don't look anywhere near as good and he is one of the best cycling photographers around, their website just doesn't display the images as well.

[Edit: What I mean is how do they get such clear high quality pictures on their site? The other BigPicture one's are stunning too, I've never seen that quality before, even on photographers websites.]

i don't know much about taking photos, but i have prepared a lot for low res display on the web in my time. one factor is that they have been carefully sharpened after sizing down. you have to do this manually to get decent results.

if you just batch resize a bunch of images and stick them on the web they will tend to look a little blurry. if you then resharpen a little they'll look better. in my experience you get better results if you scale down say 50%, resharpen just enough to bring back the detail, scale down another 50%, resharpen etc. there are also more complicated techniques to bring back small detail without introducing speckling in flat areas of colour, eg skies.

Great pics, but shame about the annoying use of the word 'pack' in the captions. A pack is a group of cub scouts, not cyclists  .
