Jon,
We were there last time - nice quaint place.

Don't listen to that Welshman - The IOW is lumpy and occasionally steep, but with fantastic scenery - and don't be fooled by Newport, it was just that he took advantage there of a slowing in the pace to jump away and get to the chain ferry

Now I'm confused - 1)I thought the chain ferry was at Cowes and 2) the round the island route didn't go through Newport anyway :?:

You are:
1 right

and

2 right

I think it was Huw who was confused (but don't tell him, then he'll go the wrong way and we'll sneak across the ferry ahead  )

Cowes is the northernmost point of the town - East Cowes is where the chain link ferry runs:

Did I say I was going to Newport? I did not. I merely stated that the climbs around it, as any fool knows, are on a par with Puig Major in Majorca :D

So you're admitting you're a fool. Nice to have it confirmed :D .

Yes, Huw did mention Newport but I thought it was a general comment, him having been there before. I've never been to Newport so maybe I'll look at alternative routes and see if Huw's right - Paul, want to join me?

Of course, we haven't heard from the real IoW expert, John "the old'un" Lovell.

Unfortunately although I will be on the Isle of Wight from 24th Sept until 1st October when I head for the flat in Greece for two weeks, I will be unable to share the joys of cycling on my beloved Island.
Having been brought up there I don't think there is a road on the Island I haven't ridden. (Not counting new estates)
Yes, there are some real pigs of hills there. Try Cowlease Hill, from Shanklin towards Ventnor, or the road out of Newport, up through Carisbrooke towards Calbourne.
And there's a nice bit of 25% between Newchurch and Winford, west of Sandown.
You could divert on your route round the Island to take in what used to be the Vectis Roads CC hill climb. You'll see it on an OS map at St Lawrence, near Ventnor.
Enjoy.!!!!!!!!
