The next Brighton Ride: 23/08/08

Postby huw williams » Tue Aug 05, 2008 3:38 pm

As announced at the cafe, the provisional plans are as follows:

8.30 - 15mph - depart prompt @ 8.40
8.45 - 16 mph - depart @ 8.55
9.00 - 17 mph - depart @ 9.10
9.15 - 18mph - depart @ 9.25
9.30 - 19mph - depart @ 9.40
A) and B) Training groups, route and time to be decided

There will also be STRUCTURED groups (it says here) returning @ 5+ min intervals rather than a free-for-all up the Devil's Dyke 8)
Usual choice of riding there and back, riding there and train/car back or riding to Turners Hill and back for a shorter ride

If the weather is bad - revert to normal club run routes and times

It always helps if we have a rough idea of how many riders are going to be in each group so if you are coming please post here

Huw,
I will take a group - do you have a time of arrival in mind? 12:00? At the pier for a photo?

I am not going to call it a training group as I always go out to enjoy my Brighton rides, but it will be PVT pace, and will embrace as many country lanes as possible.

We managed to get straight down to Brighton in 2 hours into a strong headwind, taking a quite direct route and not going over Turners Hill, so leaving at 9:40 would be quite a challenge after we have retrieved people from hedgerows, mended punctures, snapped chains etc

I'd rather we got going at 9:00am

The captain has issued strict instructions that he'd like the groups not to be infiltrated by quicker riders and kept apart as far as possible, so as the 9.00am start is already booked, how about we fit you in for a B) training group (PVT pace), leave at 9.45 for a 12.30 rendezvous at the pier? Route of your own devising of course.

I did a Rye and back ride on Sunday with Avanti, there were 6 of us. It was wet and windy and managed an average a shade under nineteen for the 125 miles door to door so I reckon that means I'll be up for a B training group ride (if I can manage a normal CR one without getting dropped like last week!).

Huw

We're not sure what group to join.

Would you clarify please:

is a 17 mph going to average 17 mph to Brighton and back or does it relate to the standard of the club run 17 mph group going to the cafe and hence will actually (presumably) ride at a slower than 17 mph pace.

Thanks

Jon :D

That's normally what happens yes - If you're comfortable with 17s group on club run - go on the 17s group to Brighton and you'll be ok.

Just check with the VC leading the group (announcements will be made closer to the time as to who the group leaders will be) what kind of speed they're aiming for if you want to be on the safe side.

Thanks, Huw

we're (Sam and I) definitely up for it. We'll make the decision about the group closer to the day 15, 16 or 17.

Cheers

Does anybody want to try the route in reverse? It wont be a fast ride if I'm doing it - sort of 16mph (if I'm lucky)

 or out via Devil's Dyke, back via Ditchling Beacon. Otherwise takers might be limited to Brighton Jane  .

Very funny, you lot - useful comments as ever from you-know-who... I didn't think there would be any problem in understanding the concept of 'doing the route in reverse' but this is the Addiscombe Cycling Club we're talking about...

At least somebody understood it - yes, Andrew, out via Devil's Dyke and back over Ditchling. It's the little gutty slogs on the normal route back that get me - and, hey, I thought it would be a change
