Carlton Massed Start ?

Postby TimN » Wed Aug 06, 2008 2:49 pm

I'm looking for a bike, not just any bike. My dad used to race in the late 1940's and 50's all over the place but in a fit of madness about eight years ago he sold his favourite bike and now i'm trying to find it or one like it for him. I'd like to ride it on the same routes he did and he would love to see it again.

I have all the details including serial number, geometry, components etc but for the moment i would be happy to just get hold of a frame size 22 or 23"

any ideas where i might get one, yes i realise i have got no chance!

I have my old Roberts from the 1980's, but it is steel (Columbus something or other) looking for a good home.

It was at one time my top of the range racing bike, then it was put into use as a training bike, and now just gathers dust.

It needs some TLC (and maybe a respray), but has braze ons for downtube levers etc.

A retro bike thread :D . Good luck in your quest Tim, you could try an email to the CTC or something and see it they can offer up any suggestions on how to try and reunite man and machine.

You could put a "wanted" advert in the CTC magazine, Cycling Weekly, & Cycling Plus.

I bet my dad's old bike was cooler than your dad's old bike ...

There are probably a load of old chaps with toe-clips who might help here http://www.carltoncycles.me.uk/home.htm

There's a great piece here http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/bikes/v-hetchins.html about going back to your old bike, or something a lot like it.

Should you find the frame you're looking for, you'll need some bits to hang on it, and bike jumbles are great fun http://www.bikejumbles.co.uk/.

You really can't beat a retro bike thread, can you?

Nice relaxed angle on the seat tube Mike.
60s vintage (when shorts were short :D ) Little Green Man Sr. (I'm sure Sean will approve of the frame).

Relaxed angle? Look again! The seat tube joins the down tube some inches (not centimetres, obviously) above the bottom bracket, producing a stupidly short wheelbase.

Nice cap, Roy!

Oh yeah. I guess your Dad doesn't have it anymore or we'd have seen you on a CR/Evening 10 on it.

They've copied the design of his kit already.

This stuff is great. I'm the first in a short line of cyclists so I can't look directly over my shoulder and see this stuff, it's all good.
