Can broken rear dropout be fixed?

Postby Dombo » Fri Aug 08, 2008 9:07 am

Anyone know if a rear dropout on a steel frame can be fixed? There is a Colnago frame on ebay that could make an interesting project if fixable:

I'd get it done properly (take it to Ev*ns) rather than superglue and gaffer tape

All the recent talk about about 2nd bikes has got me thinking, one decent mtb and and one road steed just ain't enough - should have at least a beater spare for each discipline, a fixie, plus a "project".

If it is steel, a new hanger can be welded in place - I had that done quite that quite a few times in my cyclo cross career - Roberts is a specialist in this, but the heat required strips the paint about 10cm either side of the new joint, so if you factor in a re-spray, it aint gonna be cheap.

I've had this done too, and any decent frame-builder should be able to fix a steel frame.

But, as Paul says, once you factor in a respray, it's not going to be cheap - especially if you decide to go for something a bit bling (and, hey, it's a Colnago, so why not?). You generally need to add to the headline price removal and re-fitting of bosses etc and transfers. In this case, it looks as if the stays are chromed - it's not cheap to remove and even more expensive to replace, should you feel the need.

Once you've bought the thing in the first place (£155 bid so far) and paid for the repair and that little lot, I think you could be pretty close to the cost of a new steel frame - and a half decent one at that.

If you're still interested though, Mercian Cycles do a good job and will no doubt discuss any work needed http://www.merciancycles.com/renovation.asp.

You could even have track-ends welded in place instead, for a super-posh fixie

Actually Sylv, you can't. I investigated the possibility a while back, and the track ends have different angles to road ends and the two are not compatible.

You can of course have the old fashioned long slot road ends, which will pretty much do the same job though.

GBs have a nice Colnago steel track frame in their window at the moment. Not expensive but can't remember how much.
Strange though, it has the rear bridge drilled for a brake as well as the front.
Would make an ideal basis for a fixed winter/track racing bike.

I saw a French guy doing this recently, but it was on a vtt. Think he also replaced a chunk of the seat/chain stays.
