chain / freehub skipping problem

Got a problem with my pretty much brand new mountain bike - chain seems to be skipping every so often when I put the power down.

I've already cleaned and lubed chain, and checked indexing which seems to be fine - it doesn't occur when changing gear and neither is it skipping into a different gear.

Given that when it skips it takes me by surprise, it's difficult to see exactly what's happening - I'm wondering if it might actually be the freehub rather than the chain skipping on the cassette.

Any ideas how I can tell if this is the case, or any other bright ideas?

I take it you've ruled out a stiff link?

There is an adjuster on the rear mech where the cable goes in. You may also have another one where the cable comes out of the shifter. Turn this, 1/4 turn at a time, either clockwise or anti-clockwise and each time ride the bike a little way - best to do it under load so do this on a hill - until the problem goes away. This should cure it. It's caused by new cables stretching as they settle in.

Actually I recall last time I had this i had a bent rear cog (presumably caused by a twig or something rather than my power output)
