Super glue on tyre cuts!

Has anyone tried this? If so does it really work by prolonging the life of a fairly decnt tyre

Yes and yes. Always glue up cuts on tyres as Conti GPs or ProRace are soft compound so cut up well before they wear out.

Look in the Useful Info post.

yes, i've done it on my conti 4000S. Also a soft compound. Once done, if you turn the tyre inside out that tends to hold the cut together nicely while it dries.

I have tried it a couple of times and am not entirely convinced the effort it worth it. Apart from anything else it's a hassle to remove your tyres every time. Superglue also seems very brittle. Wonder if some kind of rubber glue could be applied to tyre in situ?

The more I think about it the more I wonder if it's really effective. Cuts left alone don't seem to get any worse (unless they are right into the fabric) so is it about keeping new sharp objects out of existing cuts where they have less rubber to eat through?

Yes mainly, although it does also prevent cuts getting worse.

I've never found any problems with it as long as you make sure you hold the cut closed (once glued) for a few minutes 'til it has bonded. It is key to leave them for 24 hours too to make sure the glue hardens properly. Brittleness shouldn't be a problem it the cut is closed properly and left to cure, the only time I've had a problem is when I didn't leave it more than a couple of hours and then inflated the tyre to 100psi, this did cause the cut to open slightly and then the glue does become brittle and fall out on repeated contact with the road.

I don't do it for every small cut, only when there is a reasonable sized one and just do the rest at the same time. At £20+ a tyre I think it's well worth the effort. With regular flint clearance and gluing up when needed tyres last ages.

Yup works a treat, I go around my michelin pro-race tyres each time I change them and fill in any large cuts.
Also, superglue is actually pretty effective at binding rubber together.
