Basic Intensity Slow Twitch Fribres - BI STF
Energy source primarily free fatty acids.
Ride in this zone for long term structural development .The response to this sort of training is slow takes years and years to build a new structure i.e mitochondria , blood vessels, bone density , tendon density , liver size, neurological connections and so on. This is structural training and slow twitch fibres are used.
Functional training is the fun stuff and there's no new structures created you just improve only the structure you currently have and can lead to under preforming syndrome. The fast twitch fibres in this type of training are stimulated and the energy source is from glycogen until they run out.
Short term research showing the numbers are better off for functional training . Well , who would like like to make a Ph.D or a masters with a duration of 5 - 10 years based on structural training?
Now the question is how do you find out your BI STF zone do you use a formula based on max heart rate? How do you know this is your true max? Or do you use a physiological testing system (LBP tests) based on own body's physiological responses?
Training in the Bi-STF zone doesn't have to be boring...Try holding your heart rate in the BI-STF zone and doing a co-ordination workout for 2hrs @ 120rpm? Or just concentrating on slowing down your breathing? Have fun and be open minded about your training or you will never understand the FaCT concept..
In the last few years Power meters are now being accepted by people and I've had mine for 8 years now and use it completely differently now since learning about FaCT. Many people back then were resistant to Powermeters they just didn't understand them and dismissed them as a waste of time/money. This is the same with FaCT people don't understand their ideas or goes against their way of thinking and dismiss them. It's easy to ignore than using your brain to understand new ideas.

"In FaCT we never see a heart rate drift at all , in contrary to all and everything your read. If you " digest " the above properly you will see why. There is really in proper intensity never a hearty rate drift at all , because you stay physiologically in the same zone.
There is only a performance drift in FaCT.
Any system who claims a heart rate drift is based on performance on fixed physical information like speed . wattage . levels, but because you maintain this physical performance you actually change physiological intensity zones". Juerg Feldman 2008
