Hog Hill (30.08.08): Team Economic Energy 3/4's

Postby Toks » Sat Aug 30, 2008 6:19 pm

Blimey! if you believed some of the stuff doing the rounds on the various forums you'd think the climb on Hog Hill was the length and height of Alpe D'uez. Anyway whatever! I'd decided to take my 71 kilo grammed self back for some more fun (pain) this afternoon. Once again I was riding on my lonesome :-( The field was down to just 40 odd riders this week for the 50 minute race; and the weather was the lovely summery kind that we've been craving since June.

On lap one there was a large explosion right in front of me that scared half of the bunch to death. It was my front tyre - a complete blow out. The inner tube had been ripped to shreds. I hobbled back to the start line taking short cuts across the freshly laid soil sorounding the track. Good old Tim Harris (remember him, should be back next year 8) ) offered me his front wheel and a lap later I was back in the bunch. We were only ten minutes in and there were a group of four about 30 metres in front of the bunch. I cranked up the watts into the head wind section and a less than a minute later I was at the front urging them all to put some work in. Two laps later we had a tentative 25 second gap and with fifteen minutes to go we had a minute. A top five place was definitley assured; the issue was how to make sure I got the lowest number.
Once again the breakaway conundrum presented itself. Do I (A) light things up pursuit style on the last lap? (B) attack a few times and try to drop em or (C)chance it in the sprint.

With three laps to go I put in a testing dig and my breakaway buddies worked hard to chase me down. With two laps to go I jumped again and the out come was the same. On the bell lap I hit em again and led out on the climb. Almost did it, but not quite. I was pipped into second by Tim's mate :D :D

Toks, congrats, you planning on a late season peak for the ACC road race then ?

But, seriously, have you modified your training lately or just getting more race savvy?

Cheers Michelle, I hope your race goes well. Remember to save your legs and spin up the climb in the early parts of the race if poss. I'm gonna be staying over and partying in West London on Friday night - a friends leaving/Big Brother Final bash do - so I can't drive. :P Hence Hog Hill is doubtful on the Saturday. Interestingly enough Hillingdon is only a few miles up the road and there's more chance of me getting the remaining points for 2nd catdom. 8) 8) So I may not see ya at the Hog

Well done Tok's great ride and super write up,
I cycled past this cycling facility on the way to the beastway race and it only takes the same time to ride up to from Addiescombe as Hillingdon, but sounds a much better circuit.

You really are on fire at the moment and really enjoying it which is the main thing :D Tok's you deserve it mate :D

Well done Toks - super result.

I'm glad you like Hog Hill - or Redbridge Cycling Centre as it should henceforth be known - after all the hard work we put in to secure the site etc etc

I haven't seen any other forums but I can assure everyone it IS like Alpe d'Huez - well the first 50 metres of it  It is short but sharp - the trouble is it comes round every lap

BTW Toks The circuit length is officially 2km and exceeds the length of a circuit in the BC Technical Regs to allow a lap out - did the commissaire allow it? There has been much discussion in BC about this. The consensus is that they should be allowed at the commissaires discretion. Was there an announcement at the start?
20.3.3 In a circuit race held on any circuit of less than 2 km a rider who punctures, crashes, or suffers mechanical trouble will be permitted, except within the last five laps, to rejoin the race, after omitting one lap, in the same position as when the incident occurred, with the approval of the Chief Commissaire. Riders so affected will be considered not to be a lap in arrears and they may contest the race finish. Riders shall be permitted only one lap out per race unless otherwise allowed by the Chief Commissaire. Discretion is given to the Chief Commissaire to allow further laps out in the case of events where the majority of riders may otherwise be withdrawn. In extreme weather conditions affecting the race surface, the Chief Commissaire has the discretion to extend this facility to circuits from 2 to 3 km in length.

Cheers Paul, yep he definitley waved me back on to the circuit. I can't remember if there was an announcment at the start. From the back of the bunch it always sounds like you chaps are whispering. They should give you all megaphones. :D

That's good.
Hopefully the precedent has been set.
What we don't want is some whinging rule book reader that comes up and says "you can't do that" as we were unanimous at our Board meeting that they should be allowed and are tabling a motion to look at the rule at the AGM in light of longer circuits.

Once again - well done.
