CLUB RUN SAT 6 SEPT 08

Hi everyone,

just got back from the CR and I have to say I really enjoyed it, even though the weather was taking the mickey of me:

put the jacket on..stops raining!!!

take the jacket off..starts raining!!!!

Nice countryside for what I could see, then yummy cakes at the cafe stop..
Then, as I was really curious to see what this Box Hill looked like.. I asked if anyone wanted to do it, and there we went.
It was TIM, JOHN, ADAM and myself, the ride up to Box Hill was even harder with the wind and rain against us, but
I tried to keep my 7/8 mph steady pace (thanks to the compact gears..otherwise with 39/23 I probably wouldn't make it up), and there I got to the top to join TIM and JOHN, who were particularly going quite fast up there!
Looking forward to next CR, thanks for Marky Mark, Tim, John and all the others who were leading the way
of the 16/17mph group (I think we were going faster than that!)
Cheers, CIAO
Fabo

Unless there's a special event booked in, like the Brighton and back run, then the CR is every Saturday - if it rains you just get less people out, but still normally enough for at least a couple of groups even if it's chucking it down :D .

It's the Addiscombe promoted 10 near Dorking this week so some may be riding down there after a longer cafe stop this week, but other than that....

It's what's good about being British I believe, that's why we eat ice cream under umbrellas in the p^&sing rain and call it a holiday!

See you tomorrow

Gald you're okay Sean, tramlines can be rather dodgy particularly in the wet. Sounds like you got off lightly though as I know broken arms, collarbones, wrists are common in this type of fall. A medicinal brandy and you'll feel a bit less sore :D .

The HARD CORE - they don't worry about a spot of rain - bring it on!! the wetter the better !!! :D

As usual really enjoyed the ride. Went with Amy and Graham and the 17 mph-ers on the alternative CR over Farthing Downs. Had thought about doing an 18 but one look at the full-on nutters:

making up the group convinced Sam and I that it would be more like a 20/21 mph so gracefully bottled out.

A long, long, long, long, long delay for Graham's puncture didn't dampen spirits (God knows what he was doing) - we were even passed by the Almost J4F Group. No sooner had we got going again when Sam started getting a problem with his cleat (non-cyclist reading this might think it's painful but it isn't). He couldn't get it in. Worn flat !!! We stopped to try and sort it out but couldn't. Rest of the group waited patiently for us at Outwood whilst Graham fixed another puncture. Get Santa to stick a pair of Conti 4 Seasons in your stocking, Graham. :D

We left the group and headed for Salfords Station (thanks Amy, for sorting us out). Standing on the pedal Sam realised he could after all clip in (albeit with some difficulty). AAAARRRGGGHHH!!! We decided to swap his left- standing-foot dodgy cleat with his right cleat. It worked a treat.

Really felt good today on the bike. Cycled back along the CR route, then up over Rocky Lane Hill, and Fanny's Farm Hill, (flew up them!!) through Chipstead, up through Woodcote, by-passed Purley, (what a tail-wind - we were doing nearly 30 mph on the flat!! :D ) bought a pair of cleats at GBs and home to SE25 by 12.00. WOW!!

67 kms in total, 729 metres of climb at 3% ave - max 12%. Nice one.

today was also quite slippery, poor visibility with the water and dirt coming up from the wheels, gravel on the road
and so on... I hope nobody else had crashes!

Today's run was it actually the usual CR or slightly different?
Saw a couple of other groups starting on a different way this morning.... :?:

It seems like ages since I last went on a club run (june or july sometime). Holidays are great but they really cut into your cycling plans. Anyhow I was thinking of racing tomorrow but quickly realised that 5 weeks off the bike meant I wouldn't be anywhere near the pace. I can watch the ToB instead.

Rode down with the 20's which was good until I punctured. Mended that and made for the cafe via lambs green past the carnage of puncture victims, arriving before the downpour which the rest of my group got caugh in during the through and off. :)

These really are the best bacon sandwiches I know of anywhere. Came out from the cafe and John C was calling for a box hill group who left while I was chatting. I went to chase them down but I now think that they were going somewhere else as I never caught anyone (or prehaps I really am getting slow). Then I punctured again in the posh housing estate in kingswood, and managed to pinch my 2nd spare tube fitting it, so I had to mend the hole the other tube with glue & patch in the rain :( . Rode home a bit damp and chilly but felt good to be back out on the bike. Who need sunny mediteranian holiday's anyway when you have England 8) .

How many punctures were there today?

Hi, Fabo

glad you had fun today

The usual or conventional CR route followed for many years now is down the A23, through Reigate and then the country lanes to Charlwood - which I suspect you did today???

Recently, however some of us, prompted by Amy and others, desperate to do something different have taken the route out over Farthing Downs, through Outwood, Horley and on to Charlwood. Much quieter country lanes pretty much most of the way and lots of climbs (but nothing too steep).
cheers

Jon

PS Sean, thanks - camera is an Hitachi cost less than 40 quid, light and fits in my back pocket easily and takes better pics than my £200+ job! :D

Add me to the list.

You passed me Hal when I was fixing mine just after Lambs Green.
