Winter Racing Tyres

Postby Andy E » Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:41 am

My ever dependable Michelin Pro Race2's have finally given up the ghost so i need a new pair of tyres that are good enough to race on, but tough enough not to puncture at the first sign of the grit and gravel that seems ever present this time of year.

Was really pleased with the Pro Race2's, must have done around 4000m on them in all sorts of foul weather and never punctured, although from others anecdotal evidence i don't think they're usually this tough. Current thoughts are whether to go for a normal race tyre again (Pro Race3's & Schwalbe ultrmo's have got good reviews and both apparently reasonably puncture proof) or something less quick but more durable such as the Conti 4seasons..

Anyone have any recommendations for quick dependable winter tyres? (good grip in the wet is a must)

Checking out various online reviews and forums, the Vittoria Open Pave's seem the overwhelmingly popular vote..

They get the nod, wiggle here i come :D

Pave ones are very good too. Grant had a pair on in the Alps last year and they certainly seemed to be doing a good job.

Hate to break it to you but all the guys who I know have been racing on Vittoria's this year have had very punctured seasons so to speak.

I used schwalbe ultremos through the tale end of the winter, vary rarely punctured and found them to give excelent grip even in the wet. I changed to michelin pro race 3's as my schwalbes wore out but wish I'd have stuck with the scwalbes and replaced like for like.
