Herne Hill Cyclocross 1st round

Postby George » Sun Sep 14, 2008 6:59 pm

Quite a few of us out there today racing cyclocross around the herne hill velodrome. In the mix was Sylvain, Richard M, Rob C, Maria and myself.
A nice little course with a few different sections, some long fast flat out bits inside the track on the grass with a couple of scaffold boards to jump over and then up over the track and into the singletrack aroud the perimiter of the site.

John Mullineaux set us off and there must have been 100 riders rammed onto the grid, I set off around mid pack but Sylv got away a bit further up towards the head of the field. It was straight into a flat out sprint twice around the grass inside the track centre. Here I managed to make up a few places and get up a little bit further towards Sylv.

Into the singletrack and there was a bit of a single file flow sort of thing going on, but whenever it opened up a bit I managed to make up a place here and a place there.
There was one real steep ramp were everyone was dismounting and running up with their bikes and this is where most of the spectators accumilated to see some action going down or up as it were. :?

I was really enjoying it although it was pure pain and flat out redlining all the time, much more effort required than in a time trial where you try not to red line too much.
I was catching Sylv and could see him up ahead and was getting a decent singletrack lesson following him.
When we hit the grass I past Sylv and told him to get into my slipstream where we pulled away from a couple of hangers on.

I'm sure I was holding him up in the tight bits but we were cruising round for alot of the time together which was good fun.
On remonting my machine a few timew my right foot snagged on the front wheel, somehow I've got to resolve this problem for the future races.

Noticed Richard was tinkering with his quick release and later had to pull out because of it.

One stage I was right behind Sylv and I hit a whoop de doo at speed which nearly turfed me over the bars  , luckily I managed to save it, Sylv heard the expleative that came out my mouth I was convinced I was gonna hit the deck hard, I was ok but my bars slipped round. Later tried tweeking them but rode on the drops for the rest of the race.

I lost a little ground here on Sylv but tried hard for the next couple of laps to catch up but it was hard. Last lap bell then I finally finished without getting lapped. :D

Half the riders collapsed exhausted as soon as they crossed the line, I was also a bit red. This is gonna be super great training all winter if I keep this up and now looking forward to the next round.

Cheers Mark – I do hope you get sorted soon. If there’s one thing more frustrating than an injury, it’s an injury you don’t know the cause for. I think though in my case, and talking to Rob’s physiotherapist mate today conforted this thought, that my solo Palace fall might be the explanation – either I’ve been favouring my right leg on the bike, which can cause various problems, or my left side is still weak and the muscles contracted. So hopefully it will sort itself with time (and some exercises). It has been ok on the mtb though.

Well what can I say well done George – was that really your second-ever off-road (cycle) race? (not counting riding the grass at Palace). I have to say my main reason for coming to HH today was seeing if I could finish ahead of you! And try beat Paul Warner a now grand vet, also on a mtb who got the best of me last Wednesday.

Going round the inside of the velodrome twice felt horrible on the mountain bike, I was really dreading this section every lap. In the second part of the race I found that cranking a big gear there was more effective in that it allowed my heart rate to not go in overdrive, and float a bit more above the grass. I had George in my rear-view mirror for about two laps and I just knew he would have the strength to pass me on the grass, when he offered his slipstream I had to dig deep, but it worked great as it allowed us to make progress on the duo of Paul Warner and James Wilson on his Yeti, who had been a few tens of meters ahead of me for a while.

I can’t remember when I passed George again, but I then managed to pass Paul and James, and now had Gary Bryant as a pacer for the rest of the race. Tried to get past him on the final lap but couldn’t quite make it. As George says, it’s pretty much flat-out racing for almost an hour – you look at your watch and you can’t believe you’ve only been at it for seven minutes, and think there’s no way you can carry on like that for an hour. The longest you can afford to freewheel and recover is a couple of seconds in the technical sections. It was real warm but the first time I had the chance to grab my bottle was 24 minutes in!

Kevin and Julene Knox have some great pics on flickr so I’ll take the liberty to post a few here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevinknox/

No pics of Shaun (aka ratboy) but he was there.

Rob, I forgot I'm away next weekend, so I won't be doing the Hillingdon round.

sounds like you lot enjoyed it! Decided not to try it as £14 for one hour and also my wife planned some family stuff for today. Great pics as well. I wouldn't have liked to try and carry my old heavy MTB up that slope. That's the steep slope the HHYC use to practice steep descents on!
