Omega Thruxton Circuit Races 14th September 2008

Postby Michelle » Mon Sep 15, 2008 1:21 pm

A foggy and windy morning for my 11 lap race of the wide, relatively flat and exposed motor racing circuit that is Thruxton. There were not many signed on the start sheet, but I had done a bit of homework and noted one Team Luciano girl that was pretty good, and another 2nd cat who was pretty handy. And me and Lisa from TSN

In the end we got 9 signing on including Masters champ, track sprinter and Elite Janet Birkmeyer, along with another Team Luciano girl.

The first lap was pretty soft, but after that the attacks just kept happening, all lead by Team Luciano. They had a great one two on the small hill, one would go from the bottom to half way, then the other would go half way up to the top. That was bloody hard work. By the fouth lap we had dropped four and I was with the lead group of five.

Then ensued 5 laps of very hard through and off for me, I was obviously the least fit of the group as it was taking me ages to get to the front to do my turn. At one point I was so cooked I had to take some turns out. I got shouted at for this by one of the girls from Team Luciano, but apologised and said I would cut back in when I could. She promptly tried to take me out of the bunch by dropping me off the back AKA Gary Dodd style, but I saw it happening and sprinted round to catch a wheel again. A bit ripe, I thought, as I was not hiding ready for the sprint, but obviously giving my all.

With two laps to go, another attack directly after the hill, me and another girl Karen finally popped. I tried to reach the three at the front after about 20 seconds rest, but I was too knackered. Luckily we were so far ahead of the remaining racers that me and the other girl could take it a bit easy, which was a bit of a relief. She thought that we could catch them, but I knew better in such windy conditions.

For the last hill, I made sure she was in front of me, eying the muscly thighs and bulging calves, I thought she would be a good sprinter. In the end though, as she didn't go, I got twitchy at 30m left and pushed for the line.

Came in 4th.

4th = 8 points.

3rd Cat total points = 45

Means I am now 2nd Cat. :D

Hurray!!!! Big celebrations all round last night, and a muzzy head but still a big smile this morning.
8) 8) 8)

Big thanks to Huw for all the direction, Toks for the advice about nerves and to Keith for the support and the sprint training on Wednesday night, came in handy.

Excellent result Michelle, well done :D Big congrats on the 2nd cat. Surely that qualifies you for the fast race at the ACC Champs this weekend? ;)

Ooooh sounds like a lot of guys don't like the idea of getting beaten by a woman - "put her in the A race so we don't get beaten by a woman" I'm hearing, and "put her in the A race so the really fast guys can put her in her place."

Michelle will go in the B race cos she won't have a cat in hells chance in the A race and if the B race don't like the idea of getting beaten by a woman its up to them to make sure it doesn't happen. Last year the B race went round Hillingdon in third gear until the last few laps. Nobody tried any moves and guess what happened? The guy who ALWAYS wins the sprint on the club runs in similar circumstances won the sprint. Doh! What a surprise!

Do that this year and you will get beaten by a Woman. Do you want to be beaten by a Woman? Do ya? Well you better make damn sure you don't let her get to the finish with you then hadn't you, cos that's what'll happen if you do! :D

replace "woman" with "second cat. with a full seasons racing experience" was kinda of the way I was looking at it but if u want to rephrase the debate in twentieth century terms then I'd agree with you completely :)

to be honest I wouldn't know enough about the actual preformance differences between men & woman to make a fair judgement.

Ah yes that's the way we 'should' look at it - but where most of us blokes would happily accept being beaten by a second cat with a full season's racing experience, not so many would be happy with being beaten by a scheming, devilish, woman  Who let them in to race anyway? - they'll be wanting the vote next!!! :D

Seriously though Michelle wouldn't last 5 minutes in the training group so there's no point in putting her in the A race - wouldn't be fair (and anyway Keith has paid me top dollar to keep her out of the A race in case she kicks his ass!)

Err, actually Dan, I've only been back on the bike for 3 and a half weeks after a seriously sick summer.

So I don't have a full season of racing behind me at all.

So nerr (cue tonge out raspberry noise making smilie).

I am sorry to say that a 2nd Cat woman is nowhere near the performance level of a 2nd Cat bloke. Now if I was an Elite, I might just be able to keep up with some of the worst 2nd Cat blokes. Or if I was Nicole Cooke, I would be able to beat a load of 1st Cat's too!

So what you're saying is that you got to second cat. withiout even a full seasons racing :D

Joking aside, having been in the same group as Jo Rowsell in handicaps I probably could've worked that out for myself.

D'oh

After I'd watched Michelle, it was my turn. I'd come to support Michelle, but I happened to have put my bike in the car.

The last time I looked, there were 50 3rd cats entered, and signing-on hadn't yet closed.

I spent the 1st half of the race expending a lot of energy trying to get into a break-away. At the 1/2 way point a group of 4 got away. 2 others went to join. I'd left it too late, but it looked like this group could stay away, so I sprinted off the peleton and gave chase.

It seemed to take an age to catch up. We started to work together, but a couple of the strongest riders didn't seem to get the idea with through-and-off. They'd keep ploughing on with the last front man getting not shelter, and the rest fighting to stay attached. We managed to stay away for 4 laps, but eventually the peleton swallowed us up. A huge investment in effort for little return.

With 2 to go, a breakaway group from the E12s who'd been set off 2 minutes before us came past on what was their last lap. I didn't know if our race would get docked a lap, so popped off the front just in case  . They got the chequered flag, we instead got the last lap bell.

Come the sprint, I wasn't fresh enough to be competitive (now there's a surprise  ), so the best I could manage was around 13th, about 200m metres behind the winner.

Next time I do a circuit with such a large entry, I'm going to sit-in until the last lap. :? It'll never happen, I always want to be in a break-away. :D

Woooohooooo!! Well done Michelle! Congratulations. I predict you will win your race next Saturday - go for it 8) Unfortunately I'm away this weekend, I'm such a part timer  otherwise I'd have come out of the shadows and entered the race - just to get beaten by you (in a purely bike racing sense, steady finbar). Love it.

Keith - nice pics and good little write up-ette there.
