Any of you lot ridden the Angliru?

Postby Andrew G » Mon Sep 15, 2008 2:08 pm

Just thought I'd ask out of curiosity. If so just how tough did you find it and what gears did you have to use?

Watching the brutal ascent in the Vuelta and hearing that the top riders in the World were using 34 chainrings and dinner plate sprockets (28 or 29, but Contador had on a 30) just made me wonder what one of us mere mortals would use. Valverde has picked a 36 chainring and was really wrestling the gear round at times, and even Contador on a tiny 34/30 gear was laboured in places with it being 20% and more for kilometre long stretches of the climb.

I dread to think what gear an anti-gravity sloth like myself would have to use but that would be one hell of a climb to tick off your list.

My brother lives in Asturias and does a running race up the Angliru every year. Apparently even the winner has to walk some of the way.

Edit: He's sending me a video of the Vuelta stage that  describes. If anyone wants a look after me, I'll be happy to send it on (after checking the rest of the tape first, just in case  )

Reading between the lines - thinking of a trip to northern Spain Mr G?

Not imminently Jon, but you never know what the future holds.

[EDIT: I have it on video and would lend it, but it's S-VHS so I doubt most of you would be able to watch it, but if you can then you can if you see what I mean]
