Wow brilliant stuff Michelle, I'm real happy for you. Not many ACC'ers have gone from 4th to 2nd cat in recent memory and definitly not as a VET (oops sorry :D ). And usually when it has been done peeps have raced week in and week out which you definitey haven't done. 8) 8) I'm glad you got a grip on your nerves. I hope you've inspired others to give racing ago next year :D :D :D

Being the shy and retiring type (Are you sure we've got the same Michelle Paul?) she's far too modest to post the full details which are these: 2nd cat achieved from practically novice status at the start of this year in 10 races (we don't count that embarrassing fall-off in last year's ACC champs  ) And without wishing to cast some of her rivals in a bad light (there are ways and means in women's racing whereby you can practically score points by just turning up). Michelle's points were largely scored in E1234 races not 3/4 events, which should bode well for the step up next season as she's already used to racing at that level.

So whilst 2nd cat is impressive enough, she deserves most credit for the manner in which she achieved it

[quote="huw williams"]Last year the B race went round Hillingdon in third gear until the last few laps. Nobody tried any moves and guess what happened? The guy who ALWAYS wins the sprint on the club runs in similar circumstances won the sprint. Doh! What a surprise!

Well, that's not quite how I remember it Huw. There were a quite few moves, but I kind of acted as "patron of the peloton" (I still can't believe that people listened to my calls) and made the calls about whether I thought any attack had a chance of staying away. Any that looked like the attackers were strong were chased down, others just withered and came back in 1/2 a lap or so. Most of these moves started on the "wiggly bit" after the start/finish area, and were over by the drag up to the line, so were probably never visible to you and Toks. The field also fractured a bit in the lap before the first prime, and I tried to get my fellow "prime movers" to work together to stay away, but there was some reluctance.

I don't ALWAYS win the sprints - I've hardly contested any this year, prefering to act as leadout man to ensure a safe sprint with no incursions onto the other side of the road round the last bend. Besides, my scouting report would read "Gobby, tubby and old. Can't climb, too indisciplined to time trial, can sprint a little" One should play to ones strengths  .

Here here! I think coach Williams probably deserves a pat on the back or a couple of beer too :D :D
[quote="Michelle"]I am sorry to say that a 2nd Cat woman is nowhere near the performance level of a 2nd Cat bloke. Now if I was an Elite, I might just be able to keep up with some of the worst 2nd Cat blokes. Or if I was Nicole Cooke, I would be able to beat a load of 1st Cat's too!
Indeed Michelle, as you know I raced with the Cookes, Pooley's, Trotts and Allen's of this racing world in the 6 stage Ras in July. I'd say that the Pro/Elite women were the equivalent to a decent standard 2nd cat male racer. Apart from Cook and Pooley not many of the girls could be competitive with really strong 2nd cat males. This was proven cause to my knowledge none of the girls made any of the significant breakaways on either day. However I should also point out a minority of the 2nd cats males were sandbaggers having been good first or Elites before. You've achieved your seasons goal I believe so just enjoy yourself on Saturday. No pressure! :D :D :D

Oh, and the "B" race has always been for "novice men and all women."

It will be good for the "B" race to have some experienced road racers in it to keep some discipline (the open road is a very different place to race than a closed circuit). Even though (or perhaps, because  ) I won't be there, I support Michelle being in the "B" race.

I also think that whoever places in the "B" race should be given the opportunity to set off with the "A" race to get a feel of how the bigger boys go. They will not be expected to complete the race (recovery, etc), but it may give them the confidence to have a go next year.

I'm sure that things felt entirely different in the pack to what they looked like from the sidelines. You really don't get a true impression of the intensity unless you're in the middle of it I guess but you're being too modest - and forgetful of the fearsome and dominating sprint form you were showing at the back end of last season. Shame you're not there to defend it this year but I guess that means there's room for a new name on the trophy

So thats how ya did it  Its interesting stuff the sprinting lark graham. You could probably out sprint a good number of pros with your neuromuscular power. All you now need to do is get your threshold power up near the 400 watt mark and you'll be unstoppable

Much appreciated but I'll take the beer and none of the credit :D Sitting on the sidelines telling you what to do is easy, but you're the one that's got to go out and do the hard yards (or miles in a cyclists case)

Thanks everyone. Now you've made me go all embarrassed  Paul will make a shy and retiring type out of me yet.

But the credit is not just down to me, it's everyone who has had an input. Huw for the training, Keith for the backing and last but not least to all of you in Addiscombe for being so supportive and encouraging.

CONGRATULATIONS Mich. When you got a good result in the divs it was obvious you would progress. It was a matter of when not if. I am just so chuffed for you.

Hey Keith, that's a great picture of you chasing the break. At least you got across. That is such good training, well done Sir but I would not think of it as a wasted effort. You'll get confidence knowing you can do it. E/1/2 races are like that all the time and if you get used to being in the bunch you would really struggle as a 2nd. Better luck next time.
