Sunny Sunday ride anyone?

Postby Nicolas » Thu Sep 18, 2008 12:22 pm

And once again, but for the 28th this time!

--

Hi all,

As I won't do the club run next Saturday because of the ACC Road Race, I was thinking about a 'clubrun like' ride on Sunday, something around 50mi, start in the morning, a stop in a pub somewhere for lunch and getting back beginning of afternoon. The pace would be 17-ish. Importantly, the weather is supposed to be very good so no excuse!
As for the route, I am open to suggestions, maybe we could go and give a try to the hills planned for the Ride of the Falling Leaves (Toy Hill, Crockam Hill, Sundridge hill...). It's a bit east of our usual route, around Caterham and Oxted. As some knows, I am pretty much useless at following a route so if someone knows the area (or have a GPS!)... :D

Anyone up for it?

Nic

Nicholas, not sure we've met so hello. :P

I was planning on going out on Sunday for a bit of a spin. Not sure if you want to join me or head off with others.

Not an intended route hijack but if anyone wants to join me (my normal sort of pace), I'll be heading out to Ashdown Forest and then Groombridge, Penshurst, Westerham, and home. Bit longer than 50 miles and I wasn't really going to stop, except perhaps near the end in Westerham for a quick coffee if I fancy it. Could come back over Toy's Hill or drop in to Westerham via Crockham for a slightly shorter more direct route. If you or anyone else wanted to stop off earlier for a pub stop then there's places but I want to be back earlier so won't be able to join you (much as I like a pint or two  ). It's not proper hilly, more a bit rolling/lumpy with the odd hill. Probably nearer 70 miles if you start and finish in Croydon.

I'll be starting from Selsdon lights (sort of here near the Sainsbury's) at 9:30 - can't be bothered to ride down to GBs just to ride back up to Selsdon lights again, sorry.

Indeed it is kind Sir.

I'll disqualify the rest of the field for...er...riding bikes, and have an ACC winner

Good idea Andrew, but as far as I'm concerned, I think I'll call it off, my legs are still not back in shape from yesterday's race and nice hilly ride back. So I'll go for a nice potter at the Freewheel instead. Have a nice ride guys!

Great ride today. Ben, Apples, and Keith joined the fun although Ben turned back just before Ashdown Forest as his legs weren't playing ball today.

70 miles on the nose for me. A good pace all the way on a lumpy route, forever rolling up and down. Slight woops from me when I got carried away along the top and down t'other side of the Forest. Reached Maresfield and realised we'd overshot somewhat. Retraced, which meant the long climb back up from the other side of Ashdown and took the right both Keith and I thought we needed. It wasn't the one we'd meant so we had to do about 5 miles on the A26, but it's not that busy road and dropped us near Crowborough to get back on track to Groombridge, then Penshurst and back home.

A really nice, and quite tough, route - just got to spot the right turn-off next time :D .

Thanks for the company chaps.

I'd vague thoughts about doing the Alfold handicap with Marek, but at 7:30am I just couldn't face packing the bike up and driving for an hour. Instead I just went for a nice cycle ride in the sunshine.

Cheers Mr  . Nice ride. We were having far too much fun bowling down the road off the top of Ashdown Forest to worry about which turn off to take. :D

Some negative people may term that being lost.

With the continuous ups-and-downs of the roads in that neck of the woods, I reckon Apples thought he'd started training for next year's La Marmotte.

The important thing is not to admit that you are "lost", wait until you eventually reach somewhere you recognise and work out a route from there - that's happened to me several times  and the group have never realised that I didn't have a clue where I was for a while, but ended up in the right place - trust me..
