ACC Road Race 2008

Well, from inside the Peleton, or out of it depending on where you were in the race this is how I saw it. But firstly and most importantly a massive thanks must go out to all those that organised a great morning of racing. Toks and Keith K are great as both could easily have raced today, but took it upon themselves to organise the event.

Just before the A race I was chatting at the sidelines with Stu and then we decided to head off to the HQ for the start, I don't know how Stu did it, but he managed to fall off his bike at about 2mph, think he slipped on the gravel. I was hoping this was not a bad omen for the race, thankfully everyone stayed upright.

Huw gave us the usual warnings about horses, cars and someone mentioned Lions. Then we were off, well Paul Tunnell decided that there was no time like the present to get going and he certainly did, getting in his finishing sprint at the start of a race was a novel way to start. Not being one to miss out on an early break I went with him  . I am not sure how long we were away, it was not long that we were back in the pack and Stu and Adam came thundering past. On the next lap I think I had a go off the front to see if I could get a gap and tempt out a couple of others. Didn't last long and back in the pack and the pace was up and down. In the meantime Paul Hone managed to lose his saddle, well thats his story, the way he was dressed today I have my suspicions that he may have enjoyed this.

I think nearly everyone had a go throughout the race. I think Hal and Stu had a good lap or so off the front, at one point we had some driver in front of the peleton who had decided it was a good idea to pull out in the middle of a race, hmm not ideal but he was not there for long.

At one point Mark and Paul Tunnell went off the front. No one really chased them and they got a good gap. On the slight hill I decided I would try and get away and join them. I managed to get away without a tail and got onto Mark and Paul. I went through and started to tow them along, as we went past the finish line and round the next bend I had to get Paul and Mark to do some work as I was tiring. I looked back and the peleton was closing in. Paul and Mark went back into the group but I thought that I would keep the power down and try to stay away on my own.

I kept my head down and then whoooosh, George came flying past, 'Come on Marek, its me and you'. Oh my god, I thought, he is hammering it, ah well, in for a penny. I tucked in behind George and he was blasting it. Fantastic this should be fun  I managed to come around a couple of times, but George was so strong it was an awesome display. We kept it going for about a lap and a half and it felt fast, my breakfast was certainly contemplating making a re-appearance to give me a round of applause.

But then the peleton was back on us, apparently they had put in a good chase doing through and off, and with the quality of riders in the group we did not stand too much of a chance staying away, ah well all good fun.

I was now feeling pretty cooked, so sat at the back to have a breather, no one was able to get away now and we were all together for the last couple of laps. Coming into the finish I moved up from the back and got in about 3rd wheel behind George and Stu. George was hammering out a really good pace, the Stu did a small turn and then pulled away. I was now on the front and the finish line was closing in fast. I knew I was now in a bad place, but thought I have to at least give it a go, so I started to sprint. I was weaving a bit and then I heard a shout from Adam that he was coming up on the inside, 'should I move over or not?', knowing how fast Adam is I moved over a bit and let him come through, Stu was just behind him and then I got a bit swamped by other riders. I am not sure where I came, but enjoyed it all the same. Winning the most attacking rider was great, as I always try to have a go in all the races I do, so was much appreciated.

Well done to Adam on a fine sprint, judging by the photos he won it with a bit to spare with Stu and Steve not too far away. No idea where anyone else came, I was too busy trying to re-engage my stomach.

Cheers

Marek.....

Being in the "newbies and novices" B group it was an interesting experience. Certainly learnt that the difference between winning and loosing is down to very subtle tactics. Most of the group stuck together for the five complete laps where I felt very comfortable and it was only in the last half lap that tactics seemed to matter. On the last leg home, Anthony and Brian broke away on the slight drag up Brickhouse Lane whereas the rest of the group just seem to be getting slower. By the time I realised that they were dangerously pullying away and I could un-box myself and chase them they were at least 50+ meters away. So it was either a case of holding back and fighting for third place or chasing them. I settled for the latter, closely followed by Alan, and with a lot of effort I managed to close the gap to something more threatening by the time we turned into Croydon Barn Lane. Feeling fairly spent at this stage, the rest of the pack had caught up too, and started to pass me one by one. Within sight of the finishing line I tried to stoke up a strong finishing sprint and felt I could overtake the bunch ahead and grab third place, but my earlier effort to bridge the gap had finished me off, and only managed to anonymously roll in with the group. If only someone else had chased them :)

I extracted some data from my Garmin for those who are interested (sorry to be a geek or freeky as the Spanish apparently call them - thanks Alan!).

The last lap figures were estimates because I forgot to stop the timer straight away.

I'd put these on the General thread, but they're probably worth repeating here.

Firstly, a big thank-you to all the organisers and helpers. It was an excellent morning.

My photos aren't up to Sylv's usual high standards, but here they are anyway.

A pretty large group of 24 turned up for the B group race with the most fantastic weather imaginable. After marvelling how many strings were pulled and palms were greased by Ant to get himself into the B race, it seemed that as soon as my left foot was in the cleat, the attacks started. Don't know who went off the front first (No 16) but I found myself chasing like an eager puppy then strung out in front unable to catch but out of the shelter of the peleton. Not for long as they soon caught us.

The first three laps were pretty balls out ( or eyeballs out in my case as I don't have any of the other :D ). Paul on the Pearson did some pretty comprehensive attacks, as did Locky and I saw Brian swing to the front on a couple of occassions. The corners were nicely swept but Keith had not been able to turn up with his road gang and fill the holes, I believe at one point my positioning forced someone into one of those ( sorry). It wasn't too bad overall in terms of handling and etiquette for a novices race, but there was some unecessary braking which made for a few swear words.

We only seemed to have one lap where the pace slowed down a little so us knackered folk could get a bit of a breather.

Unfortunately on the last lap I found I had allowed myself to be boxed in so was unable to follow the quickening pace up the 'hillette'. By the time I had extracated myself the winning group were well up the road and I was chasing to catch up. Being already cooked, it wasn't looking hopeful, and indeed it turned out that I was outside of the lead group, coming in 12th or something similar. Well done to Ant who won, and Brian and the guy who came 3rd - sorry didn't catch your name at the prize giving.

Sorry I didn't win Sean (!!). Just wait till next year, after a winter of steady training I should be in contention for the sprint.

Thanks really need to go to Toks and Huw and Mr Tunnell for organising. I don't know how many sexual favours Huw had to promise to get them, but the prizes were really great - lots of TDF and other Tour DVD's, books, puncture kits, tubs of electrolyte mix....really useful stuff. Thanks also to the commissaires (although it was weird to have one riding in the B race- Mr PVT)and to John in the car and to Keith Knight for being completely selfless and giving up the chance to cause some real pain in the A race, in order to make sure we were all safe cos he was outriding on his motorbike.

It was a nice change to have this as a proper road race and give everyone the chance of experiencing real racing conditions. I certainly enjoyed racing in a big group with the boys, it beats going round a circuit strung out in groups of 3 or 4 in a womens race. And obviously it's harder so it's all good training. I think I'll be doing more of it. And hopefully, if you enjoyed it, so will you lot.

From inside the peleton :? doesn't sound like you spent much time there.

Well done Adam and Ant, and everyone else. I'll try not to cock up the dates next year so I can come and play.

Maybe a bit of a ringer Ant but in fairness you'd probably have had your legs ripped off straight away in the A race. Different kettle of fish racing with George and co to doing a CR in a training group. A well deserved reward for probably the most improved rider of the year.

Didn't get distracted by the bums this year either  .

Nice to see all the crew out on Saturday after my little break.

A glorious day for it, very little wind and great sunshine. We missed the first race as we were a little late up, but as its only about 25 mins away we caught all the action from the A race.
Glad to hear the helpful comments about my expanding waistline from the senior members of the club

Thanks Andrew, a very nice thing to say. I've come a long way in my 1st year of cycling, just hope there's more to come. Cheers. :D

Well what a gorgeous day it was on sat, just right for racing, no wind, not too hot but so sunny it makes you smile. I'd set my hopes low and just planned to go in the A race and try and last as long as possible, it was only when I looked at the signing on sheet for the B race that I noticed my name was down for that to. Thanks to Anna, my other half (she's not Sarah Toks :D ) as she said I better check. Quickly got my number and joined the other 23 or so riders across the road ready for the off. As soon as we started Lockey just went bananas and hit the front creating a small gap (I guess all his pent up frustration of not riding for the past few weeks all came out in one blast ). He was quickly chased down and caught though when another bod jumped off the front, this time chased down by Michelle who then seemed to get stuck on the front chasing like crazy, not a good place to be as she well knows. I shot accross the gap and got to the front and eased the pace a little to allow the group to all come back together, no point going for a brake when we hadn't even done half a lap yet.

All was quiet for a bit, Paul on his pearson doing some great turns on the front, I just hovered about 3 or 4th place ready to cover any attacks. The first decent one came from Brian who had a good dig off the front and got quite a healthy gap, again it seemed to be left to me to do the chasing so I came to the front and dragged everyone along to catch him up bringing the race back together again. The race was fairly static again, just the odd dig here and there but not amounting to much as the pace was quite high (seems we have some slackers who are obviously capable of riding in faster groups on the club runs :D )

I decided that I would launch an attack on the last lap if the race was still together, I didn't really want to risk getting boxed in for the sprint and didn't fancy getting wiped out by anyone who just felt like stopping in front of me (which happened mid way through the race when someone was on the front with a line of 6 or so riders right behind them obviously didn't want to be there any more and just stopped peddling and hit the breaks  One or two swear words where muttered} Alan M then gave it some as per usual in a club sprint stylee so I hopped on his wheel, looking at his TT time from the week before I knew he was going well so though I best mark him in case he went for a cheeky long one. As we turned into Brickhouse lane for the last time I launched my attack, sprinting up the 'climb' to gain a gap, I thought I would be a marked man and half expected to see half a dozen riders on my wheel but only one came with me, Brian. We soon had a good gap and worked well together, just swapping turns at the front when either of us were slowing. The gap was increasing as we made our way to the last turn then it was just the two of us, we were both now pretty much flat out, I sat on his wheel and at one point almost gave up the fight and thought I'd just settle for second but, and I know this sounds 'corny', I thought of Anna and how proud of me she'd be if I won so I just dug in for the last 50 metres or so and gave it everything I had to just pip Brian on the line after battling with him neck and neck up to the finish line.

I can honestly say I didn't have an ounce of energy left once I got over the finish line. I take my hat off to Brian and give him credit where its due, the mans a wolf in sheeps clothing, really really strong and deserved to win as much as I did for the effort he put in with me to get the break and make it stick. That last mile or so was the hardest I've ever ridden. I was hoping to go on and race with the A's but after taking the start and riding just half a lap I realised my legs didn't want to play anymore, not suprising after the pain I'd just put them through. Who ever said I was in for an easy race, go eat your words

I must say a big thank you to all involved in organising the race, Toks, Huw, Mr T, my misses for making the tea, Keith K and to the Addiscombe collective for turning out in such great numbers.

The only thing I'd change for next year is before the B race gets under way I think a little talk about whats expexcted of you as a rider rather in a race rather than on a club run. I had one instance of someone on more than one occasion trying to shove me into the hedge because they wanted the wheel I was following. I had to gently move them out of the way, only then to be asked 'why dont I slow down to let him in  '.
You want a wheel, you earn it, you cant just barge someone out of the way by riding dangerously close to them. Also if your on the front and get tired, peel off to the side, dont just stop peddling and hit the anchors. If you needed a lesson on how to do this just watch Paul on the pearson, he got it down to a fine art he was doing it that many times. :D

Overall the standard of riding was excellent, although I didn't see a great deal as I didn't get lower than about 6th place through out the race, but judging by the lack of swearing and everyone crossing the finish line in one piece it must have been good.

Over all a great day, well done for Adam for winning the A race and for Stu and Steve for battling out for 2nd and 3rd. Looks like I'll be with you guys next year. :D

Firstly a big thanks to Paul Tunnel an the organisers. This wasn't just a last minute, thrown together event. Take a look at the British Cycling Racing Calendar. It dropped on my doormat months ago. It's there in plain black and white.

Like Toks says, what other club offers that?

Strange to think that it's only a year since my first every race - last year's Members Only Road Race at Hillingdon. A collective thank-you to The Addiscombe.

Anyway, a bit about this year's race. For perhaps the first time ever, I tried to race using my brain a little more than normal. Ususally I just chase everything. Instead I arrived at the end with something left in my legs, although ot enough to make it past The Shadow. I'm very happy with 4th place though. :D

Toks you want feedback - Last year at Hillingdon was great. This year Newchapel was an ideal circuit for giving people a taste of road-racing. Nice too that everyone didn't have to trek so far to get there. Next year? All I'd suggest is do something different again. Keeps it interesting!

P.S. Thanks for the puncture repair kit Huw. That's 2 races in a row I've got to the end of without a flat.

Now that was fun!

Good ride down from CSS with Dan upping the pace as usual; wondered where all the roadies in the A race where? obviously they where taking this seriously and saving there legs for the main event.

I decided that I would throw myself into the A race as this seemed fair even though it was going to be a baptism of fire and boy was I right!!
Now being a steady eddie it came as a shock as Paul T shot of the front. Jezz! Now look what you’ve started.

After that I knew I was in for a kicking but was enjoying myself. Paul T went off the front again and joined him for our moment of glory, when Marek joined us this was looking a good move. Unfortunately the bunch had other ideas obviously worried with this serious break!!

The rest of the race my legs were paying for my efforts and the changing pace, the elastic snapped- too much in the red for me and was spat out the back for a solo effort in the last two laps.
Legs where like jelly by the end but wanted to finish, hats off to the rest for making it look easy.

Big thanks for Paul, Toks, Huw and co.

Another excellent event . can’t really fault this, standard of riding was great, never felt unsafe, an ideal course for first timers apart from a few bad potholes on some stretches.

Hey Antloony and big thanks to your lady Anna (so she's not Sarah-Ann )for all her good work on saturday...Good points about a safety speech for the B group.  of course it sounds corny  - but thats ok :D you did the business 8) 8) . Unlike Andrew i don't think you would've had you legs ripped off with the A's but yes it would've been very tough especially in latter stages. Chapeau dude :D

Hey Keith thats a brilliant effort mate I had no idea you came fourth. 8) 8) I reckon yourself Andy and Dan should all make 2nd cat next season. In some ways being a strong rider is the easy bit - having patience, guile and tactical nous are the hardest bits to execute and result in high placings :D :D
