In actual fact if BC had to rely on members fees, it would only last a few months. That aside, to answer the question...

The additional benefits (over silver membership)are:

Personal Accident Insurance cover and the
Quarterly Racing Calendar Magazine (RRP £15.00)

Personal Accident insurance cover is provided for all Gold members aged between 5 and 75 years. This is an additional form of insurance cover providing death, permanent disability and hospital benefits.

[quote]Gold members are covered for non-competitive, social, leisure and utility cycling and also competitive cycling in events held under the auspices of British Cycling. Gold members are also covered whilst participating in competitive events held under the auspices of other cycling organisations whose rules and regulations (including Event Safety Guidelines) are acceptable to British Cycling. (Cover includes direct travel to and from any venue for the purposes of participating in an approved event.)

Silver & Bronze members do not benefit from personal accident insurance.

Benefits:
Permanent disability - £50,000
Total and irrecoverable loss of sight of one or both eyes - £50,000
Loss of one or both limbs - £50,000
Total and permanent loss of hearing in one ear - £12,500
Total and permanent loss of hearing in both ears - £50,000
Total and permanent loss of speech - £50,000
Death - £7,500 (£5,000 for under 16 and 71-75 years old)
Hospital cash benefit - £25 for each complete 24 hour period up to a maximum £750.

Conditions:
Permanent disability defined as "any and every" occupation
Includes use of power cycles (not registered for road use) or dernys
Excludes:
- professional cycling
- occupational use, tool of trade
- temporary or partial disablement
Age limit: 5 to 75 year olds
Benefits limited to £5,000 max. for members aged 71-75 yrs
Geographical limit - worldwide subject to a maximum of 21-days outside UK
All claims to be reported within 5 working days and independent evidence required that the cycle has been involved in an accident.
Whilst we are unable to provide this additional cover to members aged over 75 years and under 5 years, it is very important to remember that members' liability insurance cover is still provided to ALL Gold and Silver members without age restriction.

Whilst I won't stand up for BC in all they do, I believe the membership provides good value for money compared with other NGB's in other sports and other countries, and the small cost for the accident insurance is worth it given how dangerous the sport can be.

No :D . I get silver as I have private medical insurance through work and I'm not enough of a doom-monger to get PA cover for myself. I take Paul's point about the fact that there can be danger involved in racing, but it's not really that dangerous. The vast majority of offs will only result in road rash or a broken bone, which is nothing really. As far as I'm concerned there is a damn site less than there is compared to commuting, I don't get PA cover for that so why bother for racing.

In my opinion there's no point joining BC unless you intend doing BC races. If you just want the insurance cover then join the CTC (same price as silver BC) and at least you get a magazine that's worth a read rather than a list of events.

Although having said that, there's always a chance of some VP piccies in the BC magazine, so you might want to join for that benefit Sean

Not at all I love it, I'm crap but I love it :P . "It's full of nutters" only applies to 4th cat races at Chertsey the year I raced there. I did 4 races there and there was at least one crash in all of them, and no they were nothing to do with me :D . In one, the "Chertsey carnage" day, one idiot managed to cause 2 completely different crashes in the home straight taking down 3 Addiscombe riders in the process. I like the circuit and think 3rds and E/1/2s are good races. The 4ths just attracts idiots as you can cruise round in the bunch at 25mph without breaking sweat due to the size of the field, which then tries to go through the right/left 3 abreast but still with everyone trying to clip both apexes  . Some also like almost stopping as they crest the 2nd lump  .

Just out of interest, what other countries are more expensive to race in than the UK?

I am told that racing in France/Belgium is literally as cheap as chips. Say 5 euros for some races, in which you can easily profit big time from prize money. It has to be said, from a students point of view racing is very very expensive, there seems to be little or no consideration by race organisers / BC for the ability to pay of espoir/junior riders. Not to mention the cost of getting to races.

For example, last Sunday: Race entry £17, Fuel bill appox £15... Prize Money £50 (And that is by no means a standard). So thats only around £18 to spare for winning the bloody thing. Now I'm not saying I should be able to make a living from these races, but still... And I'm lead to believe that the reason racing is so expensive/prize money so poor is that BC charge so much in levies. I have been told as much as £7 out of a tenner goes straight to BC HQ, is that right Paul?

As I said, I'm not defending BC, just answering Sean's question - Gold benefits V Silver.

Jon - the questionof whether to join BC or not is a very different one.

Andrew - The insurance cover is "on a bike", not just racing. Of course if you have similar, why pay again as you won't get twice the benefits (that's fraud!!)

Adam - I didn't say racing cost - I said membership of NGB, which I believe is much higher in other countries
In Spain, for example to be able to race you must have medical insurance and proof of it to be able to obtain a racing license and also require all license applicants to undergo a complete physical every year that includes detailed heart monitoring and even lung capacity tests. If your doc sees something he doesn't like, you don't race. End of story.( As a foreigner racing in Spain you have to buy a health and accidental insurance plan that covers you ANY TIME on the bike whether it be racing or training. The cost of this plan is a 60Euros per year.)

NO it is certainly not true what you say about BC taking so much - the standard race levy is £3. Different regions have an additional "regional" levy ( ours goes towards the cost of taking Stu to Belgium!!!) and is £1.50. And Regional C and Go-race are lower.

Terrible behaviour, you'd never catch insurance companies getting up to any dubious practices or having below par morals  .
