Riding/training on these dark cold days

Postby Nicolas » Fri Oct 03, 2008 2:03 pm

As winter seems to be setting in, I'm sure a lot of us need an extra motivation to go out and ride in the evening during the week. I have seen the Dulwich Paragon riders are doing 'chaingang' training on Tue, Wed and Thu night (so during nighttime these days) , do we have something similar?

Nic we'll be starting something similar probably in late Nov or December.

Our chain-gang is every wednesday from Butlers and Css.

We head off down the A23 to Gatwick Airport turn and come back.

It's pretty tough and good training.

OK, it sounds good but... on the A23  ? Isn't it a problem coexisting with the busy traffic?

Fast. Having ridden with the guys who usually take part in the chain gangs dont expect an easy time. Its usually the guys from the training group who do it. There's always room for a slower group though if enough numbers can be encouraged to give it a try.

those chaingangs were great fun. we've never had any traffic problems (touch wood!)

they are very fast though, doing 30 second turns on the front as hard as one can...and when george rocked up on a time trial bike....well im sure you can imagine the amount of leg burning carnage it produces!!!

To be honest, the chaingang could do with a slower group. It can be a bit daunting going out with the fast boys initially, I speak from painful experience. Last year there always seemed to be slower riders around but never really enough to get an organised group going. The the other thing that I noticed from last year, it is a bit of commitment mid week. It started off with a lot of people with a lot of enthusiasm and by the end had dropped to 3 or 4. Luckily the 3 or 4 could ride together.

I thought the chaingang didn't start until after the New Year last year :?:

Would be good if the group could ride a bit more effectively. I.e not burn it up from the gun, get to Gatwick as a group but then speed up on the way back. That way the ride would be more accessible also.
