Antony

If you want I have a 27in front wheel that may fit that fine old peugout of yours. Let me know if you want it, its alloy, tyres and tubes too.

[quote]What is it with winter bikes? All the above machines look pretty decent to my untutored eye, and as keen cyclists, you're all likely to give them a clean and lube after riding in the wet. Would not winter riding be more pleasant if done on the best bike? I sold my second road bike because after riding the best one I didn't enjoy riding it anywhere near as much. A bit of salt and rain won't hurt.

Indeed I agree that if you clean your best bike regularly and replace parts that are worn out or broken then stay on it for the winter.

The reason I'm using a winter bike is it's heavier and will be harder to ride uphills therefore when I start racing on my light carbon bike I should be flying.

It has mudguard clearance and eyes for all the wet weather riding so is more comfortable for me and everyone else around.

More flex with the steel frame so much more forgiving with potholes and bad roads.

If I bend or break it it's cheaper to replace

Can't say I clean and lube my bikes every ride. Sometimes you just want to sling the bike in the shed and get warm and dry.

The salt really takes the shine off gears and brakes.

It's times like these when a winter bike really comes into it's own.

I'm with you, George. It's been pretty much traditional that - at least with the old style, well grounded roadies - you ride a winter bike with mudguards etc and do long, steady (not fast) rides, to build up strength and stamina. You then get on your light bike and think, wow, that's more like it!

Now that I have my Enigma, I have put mudguards back on my blue Roberts and will ride that over the winter. If I can improve on that then wait till I get back on the Enigma come spring 8)

I stand corrected.

Dropping my 6 month old bike on black ice was no fun. Scuffed the QRs on my new wheels, broke the brake hood caps (yes, yes I know I should have got Campag!), chipped the paint.

ebay here I come. Again.

Sorry to hear that the Peugeot is no longer with us. That picture certainly brought back some memories, I rode my first race as a schoolboy on an almost identical bike! Must have been about 1983.
