48x17 would still be pretty big to start out on on the road Sylv, although you are much stronger than me. If you've got a flip-flop hub it might be worth fitting a 17 one side and an 18 on the other, that way you can just flip the wheel to switch the gear if you want to go one way or the other while you find out which gear suits you best (just don't fit uni-directional tyres). The cogs aren't expensive so always worth having a good selection.
Bit of a SOTBO but get a good 15mm circular spanner for the track nuts (I use a Halfords motor one, size matters as ones that are too short can make (un)tightening a real bugger out on the road.
I've found 48x15 quite good for Herne Hill and the couple of 10s I've done on fixed.
