Mike rode 72" all winter, I started with 69ish (48x19) which is similar to what I had on my previous fixie and then moved it up to 72" (48x18) after a couple of months which I still use. Depending on your preference/style of riding (although obviously you do spin a bit more with a fixie) I think anything between about 67" and 75" is good for a route like the club run. I find 72" fine on the hills (even Box Hill is okay just involves a bit of honking) and can spin up to about 30mph (don't have a computer on the fixie so don't know exactly) and avoid using the brake on the descent from Rusper to Lambs Green.

From the pics you've posted don't use cow horn bars like in the last photo. Normal drops with two levers is far more comfortable and practical. Even though there's only one brake fit both levers as you pull on the hoods quite a bit when honking out the saddle up the hills.

48x15 is pretty monster, though ideal for a track :D I'm on a 48x18 at the moment as i have to get up and over Crystal Palace every day, but planning to change it to 48x17 in the coming months.

48x17 would still be pretty big to start out on on the road Sylv, although you are much stronger than me. If you've got a flip-flop hub it might be worth fitting a 17 one side and an 18 on the other, that way you can just flip the wheel to switch the gear if you want to go one way or the other while you find out which gear suits you best (just don't fit uni-directional tyres). The cogs aren't expensive so always worth having a good selection.

Bit of a SOTBO but get a good 15mm circular spanner for the track nuts (I use a Halfords motor one, size matters as ones that are too short can make (un)tightening a real bugger out on the road.

I've found 48x15 quite good for Herne Hill and the couple of 10s I've done on fixed.

But check the size of your nuts first. I've got some that are 15mm and some 14mm.

SOTBO - Statement of the bleeding obvious. :D

Thought is was in fairly common usage, maybe just in the Green family.
