super muddy

I'll bet, but the pair of you clearly enjoyed your mud-plugging. Great results, but will it take longer to clean the bike than it did to finish the race  .

We should have a good photo from John M just after the finish Dom.

Well today was was cyclo-cross is all about 1/3rd fitness, 1/3rd riding skills, and 1/3rd mental toughness (starting with finding the motivation to get out of the house).

Non-stop rain all morning was going to make the course interesting, but didn't make the thought of a warm-up lap too enticing, so I got onto the rollers at the back of the magic van - could just about fit in with my back touching the ceiling - good for practicing the "flat back" position, not soo good for the arms which have to take all your weight. George did go for a lap to test his newly built bike, and riding to the line I saw him "Oh, Sylv!" - I was expecting him to tell me it was horrible out there, or that he'd crashed - but no he was raving on how awesome the course was!

The start down a grass field bogged down with a couple inches of wet mud was a comedy moment, with people sliding sideways left right and centre. I was able to make up loads of places and was a couple places behind George. I was surprised that the course was almost exactly the same as when I rode there last a few years ago, as I thought they'd made it a whole lot different. But no it was the usual mix of climbing, fast descents and tree-covered twisty singletrack. Everything was slippery and there were a couple of deep puddles you couldn't quite avoid - maybe 5 inches at the worst. At least it kind of cleaned your bike twice a lap.

I was glad I'd warmed up and was feeling ok and having good fun steering my bike through the treacherous course, even though it was extremely hard work. Wasn't quite sure where I was, I could see George ahead for the first half of the race, and engaged in a battle first with Andy from Dulwich and Ben, then with Nigel Ling in the last three laps - I'd put a big dig on the final part of the climb to get ahead into the singletrack and put a few seconds on him, before he'd make it back on the fast downhills, and then overtake me on the grass area at the start/finish, the only place where I felt my mtb was letting me down.

Last lap I ran into some gear trouble, it wouldn't shift down, probably gunk in the cables., so I couldn't stick to Nigel's wheel. Then the gears would suddenly shift down all of a sudden, generally up a hill or in the singletrack. I lost my focus to try and catch him up, and could see there was no-one immediately behind, so allowed myself to ease of for the rest of the last lap.

Well done to George who has really taken to the mud like a "fish in water" (literally as he dived into a pond after the finish to clean himself and his bike. Same pond everyone was weeing in before the start). I had so much in my eyes after finishing that I couldn't open them, and had to be guided towards water and something to wipe it out. Also Aodan and Mark who made it out on such a, well not so nice day (Maria would have ridden but was ill).

Well what a fantastic day's racing, I really thrived on every second of this race. All night it had been chucking it doen and driving down to the event there was standing water all over the road, so we knew this was gonna be a wet one. :D

At the start missed the grip placing as I turned up a bit late so managed to sneek my way up to the second row of the grid.

At the whistle is a mad sprit along a sloppy wet field straight in to the woods, muddy water was being sprayed everywhere and I couldn't see a thing so just kept peddaling. Bunny hopped across the small ditch and honket it up the side of the next field and splash straight through the deepest puddle of the course, a few riders scirted this so I managed to nip past them.

Sharp right turn into the woods and there was carnage on the really steep cross camber decent, I managed to ride through this around the bodies and upside down bike strewn across the muddy ground and out to the next open section.

I could see now that I was up to 4th position and then before I knew it I was up to 3rd. Through the woody sections it was super slick and slippery and people where having all sorts of problems with traction, my bike was sliding sideways lengthways well all over the shop but I managed to keep the wheels turning and propelling me in the right direction.

There was just one section of the course where I had to dismount as I found this much faster than actually trying to turn the cranks round up the steep double bank.

The fast open sections where very slippery and I was continually changing lines to get the best grip, spray from the front wheel got worse with speed so in the end I was just squinting my eyes to keep the mud out along the fast bits.

On the third lap the second place man had his tub roll off so now I was up to 2nd position. Spotted Mike Anton with his camera snapping away at me with my tounge hanging out, I was really loving the conditions, they seemed to really suit me, it was bringing back memories of my motorcycle enduro riding days where I always liked it wet and snotty in the forests.

There were loads of spectators cheering us on and especially when they saw I made an extra effort to get up the banks without dismounting. I just fell off the onece on that really technical off camber decent, I think a rider had fallen infront of me and I just clipped their wheel so I slid down the bank on my arse, which was very funny and not really painful at all because of the soft mud on landing.

Passed Mark L and Aoden who almost de lapped himself on one of the climb, I can honestly say Aoden was the hardest rider to overtake.
Last lap and I just prayed that I didn't have a mechanical, so there I was at the finish with a second place. :D :D

I was so chuffed and glowing from the race, but mega filthy, so to clean off I just jumped in the large pond right by the finish and cleaned off in there, I seemed to be the only rider doing that though.

Sylv was so dirty after the race and couldn't see a thing, it was so funny he stepped backwards and almost fell over his bike.

The new bike did me proud today and didn't miss a beat although was making some strange noises from the rear cassette/ freehub area, but I think everyones bikes where doing the same thing.

I can't much more to those reports, well done and of course well done for the results. I never really got into the swing of things today, had to take my glasses off before to warm-up lap which everything look slightly different. I took the safety first line mostly and ended up walking/running almost every section of singletrack on one lap or another which seems a bit of a waste but didn't lose more the a few yards to those who cycled through. Only fell once but luckily the mud was soft. I don't think my Addiscombe shirt is never going to be clean again.

Great pix - bit expensive tho

I think I found one of Aodan not walking

George you do look like you're on drugs like John said on some of them

Forgot to mention - on the start line I noticed the guy ahead of me on a mtb was gonna start in his small (22t) chainring! - was careful to avoid being stuck behind him

The size of that puddle - a complete surprise the first time round http://www.flickr.com/photos/92937368@N ... 784623153/

That puddle was brilliant, it helped clean off all the mud from the bike and tyres just before the bit where you really needed the grip.

Aoden did alot of running, maybe he thought it was a duathlon  ,

There were loads of people taking photos all over the course, I think I'm gonna buy a couple of Mike's prints, I'll se if he can do a better price
I hope it rains all winter long now and we can have some amazingly snotty conditions just like Sunday :D :D  :D

George, I take pity on your washing machine if you're going to end up like that every weekend over the winter.
