Hill Climbs - Where and what ya doin'?

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Seriously, is anyone up for a tandem punt at the Bec hill climb :?:

Paul, you don't seem to have been inundated with replies. I'm happy to give it a go. If you tell me you were hoping for someone younger/lighter/stronger/better looking (or even someone who had ridden stoker before) I'll understand.

[Of course, you will have been hoping for all these things, but you can't always get what you want.]

I see you're up for a laugh then.....not ridden a tandem before and getting up White Lane....but why not?
We'll have to get together for a quick practice ride.
What pedals do you use?
Guru P

I'll get my entry form off in the morning and will pm you about pedals and practice, Paul.

Whoops! I didn't realise the wife was logged on with my laptop  !

Don't panic Paul, you won't be doing the Bec with her on the back of the tandem  .
I'm gonna do the double, Catford and the Becks, might as well make a day of it. Are we London South district! I've got the forms and will send them off tomorrow, is that too early. Not done any specific training but might have a few goes up 'em at some point and the Legs of steel ride on Saturday should give the ol' pins a taste of the horrors to come.

You could also put one in the post for the Wigmore event which is on October 5th. I am holding open until Sunday, so you would need to phone or email me before then to let me know that an entry is on its way. That applies too, to all of riders who are expressing a interest in Hill Climbs. An opportunity to get the feel of an anti gravity event before tackling the gut busters on the 12th.

See separate thread Wigmore CC Hill Climb details.

Had a little reccy of Yorks Hill and White Lane this afternoon.

Well, they're a bit harder than I thought, but nothing the 53 can't handle.

York Hill was rather damp after yesterdays washout and as a result the soggy leaves pressed flat against the tarmac were a cause for slippage at times. I only span once but was careful to avoid them thereafter so any riders listening, take note. Hopefully the preceeding couple of days will dry the road a bit more and remove the issue altogether. It's a bugger thought that climb, easy first part, steep section, levels out, and then one last steep ramp to the line. Ouch, not sure on how I will play that one.

White Lane, well, it's the easier of the two but thats not making it any easier! It starts steep, and just gets steeper. On our first ascent we were greeted by a procession of Sainsburys delivery vans making the last 3 inches of tarmac really the only place to ride. And this was just before the steep section through the trees up to the finish. Again, ouch. My second ascent was a touch quicker but with no respite at the top and a quick descent no doubt oxygen debt played a part. My tactic for this one will be to stay seated and steady(ish) until the steep section, then get out the saddle and nail it. This is surely where to make the time count. We'll see...

Anyhow, an interesting ride as I hadn't actually ridden either climb until today. I'm just hoping it's sunny! Nice bit of cake at Fanny's on the return though, just what the doctor ordered.

Cheers Adam. I know White Hill intimately (still can't go up it any quicker because of that though  ), but have to confess that Yorks is a bit of a mystery as I have always studiously ridden around it rather than up it  so good to know a bit in advance. Hope to get a chance to get over there before the weekend but if not at least I can wing it with a bit of background info now.

Is there a mega-prize fund at the Bec this year? Over the last few years there have been some pretty big team prizes which unfortunately got hijacked by whoever could assemble the fastest trio of riders that complied with the CTC rules, whether or not the riders had the slightest connection with one another. Given the lack of obvious promotion of the event this year compared with last maybe not? Then again, maybe I need to check my emails more often!

Adam - I think you will do pretty well in both events - sprinters and "powerclimbers" tend to do well in these events. Your time in last year's club Hillclimb was respectable enough and you've come on massively since then. If the field is down a bit on last year, you could get well up there.

OK - Just checked my personal email. Amongst the rather large number of unread spam there is an email from the Bec CC orgniser. The BIG prizes remain this year for the Bec CC event. :P See below.

Entries so far for this the 53rd Annual edition of our event are arriving well ahead of the normal schedule, with Team Corley Cycles being the first team/club entry (Min 3 riders) to be nailing their colours to the mast in chasing the team/club award. Welcome lads, I hope you enjoy your first experience of a Bec C C event.

Please note, our event has been moved a week earlier than in previous years so as not to clash with the Half Term Holidays, as has the Catford C C Hill Climb. Both of these events will retain their historical position of Catford in the morning & Bec in the afternoon for those who wish to try and take the crown of 'doing the double'.
Also the two Brighton Mitre C C Events, have moved correspondingly to the same weekend, so theres an opportunity for someone to be the first rider ever to win all four events and really be the 'top dog' of the hills.

So there you have it, 4 chances to pit your skills against gravity on the weekend of 11th & 12th October
Further details of all 4 Hill Climbs can be found on the CTT website, or in the CTT Handbook

Entries for the Bec C C Event will close 6.00pm, Fri October 3rd and should be sent to myself at: 5 Archer Road, London SE25 4JN

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again, those very nice people at Tandrige District Council have granted us the enviable status of a closed road for the duration of the event. Without this assistance I doubt the event would have been able to continue and enjoy the status it now has, given current traffic flow in the area.
So for that we at the Bec are very very grateful to Trish Bloxham and her colleagues.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prize list for the Bec C C Event will remain as the previous couple of years, but this might have to be the last year of fairly substantial prize money unless I can find a sponsor for the event. But I can assure you the event will continue for several years yet. And hopefully retain its unique position of attracting probably the most noisey & enthusiastic spectators and a class field of athletes regardless of the prize fund....

1st £1,000.00
2nd £100.00
3rd £50.00,
Fastest Lady £20.00
Fastest Junior £20.00
Fastest Vet £20.00
Fastest Team/Club of 3 £900.00
Greatest Beating of the event record £100.00
Lantern Rouge £10.00

I can claim the ACC prize for that as I've had the startsheets for the Brighton ones and I'm the only ACC on there :D .
