I can achieve the same result by rummaging in a biscuit tin :) .

Aren't you supposed to lose a few inches when the weather gets colder though?

any advice on how to remove a stubborn fixed sprocket from the hub thread? I have tried with a chain whip, unsuccessfully

I've only had one really stuck when it was a bit rusted (although mine was the lockring rather than sprocket). Shifted it by spraying a lot of WD40 on it and leaving it to soak overnight. Then the following day back with the chainwhip and should shift it. WD40 works really well when left to do its stuff, most of us just don't leave it long enough.

Get a bigger chain whip :D .

Seriously, and it pains me to suggest this, get a Shimano DA chain whip and increase the leverage by sticking a monster tube spanner on the end.

There is also a method (can't find the link at the moment) which involves removing the wheel, taking the chain off the crank and double-wrapping it round the sprocket. Put the wheel back on and then grab the wheel rim and try and turn it. The chain will hold the sprocket and you should get enough leverage from the wheel to unscrew it. You might just end up taking a load of paint off your chainstay though.

Yeah a big bit of pipe would work but I think I'd go for the WD40 first in case you end up damaging something (your own hand when the whip slips most likely from my experience). Why is the sprocket stuck, has it corroded a touch or just put on by a big bloke? Either way the WD40 cleans up the thread and sprocket a treat too so if it does then come off it's nice and clean :D .

it's been on my mtb wheel for ages (it's a 17t which i'll need for the road, agree 48*15 is huge i only rode it round the block)
did put some oil in but not overnight yet
thing is the chain whip is not for 1-1/8 chain so not enough grip
i'll have another go incl. Mike's method and if doesn't work will take it to Butlers thanks
