Which MTB Tyres (from Evans)

Postby Andrew G » Thu Oct 16, 2008 11:11 am

Nice easy one for you folks. I'm going to treat my MTB to some new tyres as the current ones are the originals. They're only about 15 years old but I feel it deserves a special treat.

I want to get them today on my way home and pass an Evans at London Bridge so will make life nice and simple to get them in there.

They do some Contis, Panaracers, and Maxxis around the £20 a pop mark and I want something pretty decent, and fairly tough and durable, but now nothing about MTB tyres so please point me at your favourites for trails type riding :D .

Ta muchly.

Panaracer fire XC Pros. Wire beaded should come in around 20 and same tread pattern as the kevlar folders. I have run these for years and love them more than my GP4000s on my road thing.
See these a lot around Leith Hill, Afan and most importantly they come with a coloured sidewall to match your bike, if it's red blue or yellow.
Contis tend to be a little soft and prone to cuts but have a rounder profile so can be banked harder without skittering. Don't know Maxxis.

Another vote here for the Panaracer Fire XC Pro (Grahame and Dombo in agreement shock!).

I use them year round and world wide. There are better tyres for each condition (mud, dry, gravel, rock, rooty) but there are not many that are better or more predictable all rounders.

Thanks chaps, they don't have the "normal" ones in stock but have the Kevlars so got some of those. A few more quid but if I'm only replacing the tyres every 15 years... .
[quote]Designed for the rider who wants it all in one tyre. The Fire XC Pros tread design features strategically placed central low profile knobs of varying heights for all out speed on smooth surfaces and aggressive side lugs for cornering.

Sounds just the ticket. Went for the 1.8 rather than the 2.1 as I fancy doing the odd cyclo-x when I'm free.

The bike's silver Dombo but that goes with anything so I should be able to pull off a red sidewall with it :D .

you're supposed to retort that it should be about function not form, or something like that! :)

Surprised I didn't see you in there, Mr . I spent a good part of my late lunch in the bike shops of Tooley Street. As was the case today, I often drop in at Evans to get some Muc-Off, then... leave.

When you were there, were there about four generations of a Spanish family agonising over the purchase of a bike lock?

I don't think I need to bother thinking up a knob joke now

Actually Adrian I went to the one off Fenchurch St at lunch as it's nearer, but also next to useless and therefore didn't have any, so I phoned LB and reserved to collect as I pass this evening. I'll let you know if the Spanish family have made a decision yet.

The boys on MBR magazine say you want a Hutchinson Toro - as its just won the best winter tyre award in their group test for the second year running

But they are the same people who said that you need 21 speed transmission and 4 inches of suspension at each end of a cross country race bike to be competitive in an endurance race - exactly 1 month before being beaten by a lap by my team on singlespeed hardtails at Mountain Mayhem
