Crankset advice - Ultegra or Dura Ace

Postby Dombo » Fri Oct 17, 2008 10:44 am

Am upgrading my triple chainset from current Bontrager RaceLite. Choice is Ultegra or Dura Ace, both in SALE at chainreaction. As a non-racing, non-weight-weenie, non-bling-factor-bothered type would I notice a difference between the two? Rest of kit on bike is Ultegra, except brake calipers which are 105.
Any advice gratefully accepted unless it mentions I should have got Centaur or Chorus or Record :D

Hey Dombo I use:

Shimano 105 on my TT bike and cyclocross bike

Ultegra on my Road race bike

Dura Ace only makes a difference to your wallet/weak mind :D

have you considered a compact instead of triple? there is no DA compact, though.

The 2009 Dura-ace crankset is available in compact; plus(+) its an absolute steal @ a miniscule £300.00

Don't get the ultegra SL crankset as the nice shiny Ice Grey finish rubs off in no time & it just looks poo.

The fulcrum cranksets look really nice & I think there in the same sort of price range as the ultegra parts.

I have. They certainly look better. However the bike already has a triple fitted and I quite like the bail-out, last gasp option of the 30x25.

It's my mtb heritage. When in doubt, stick it in the granny and twiddle.
