winter training tyres

Postby Rob Taylor » Sat Oct 18, 2008 4:30 pm

i know this has prob been done before but

what tyre do people ride for the winter?????

lots of forums etc say michelin carbon krylion - however i found they cut quite easily and puncture - today i got a big cut in the sidewall making one a write-off (this is the second krylion that has done this to me - the first time it was on a brand new one - this one hadnt done many miles either) ride pro 2 race in the summer but recon they will cut up too much in the winter.

need a tyre thats good gip in the wet and puncture resistant
not too worried about fast rolling resistance as they are for winter -

what does people recomend???

Rob, I ride Conti Gp 4000's or 4000S's all year round, for training, racing, on the track, and even on the turbo (I'm not changing tyres just to do a turbo session). They have excellent grip in the dry and the wet, they don't cut up much, and they are easy to get on to rims (no need for tyre levers). I've only had 7 punctures in 5years and only 2 of those was due to a flint or glass or similar, all the others have been impact punctures from hitting holes or stones, so they are, in my experience, very puncture resistant. They also last very well too, so are quite good value :D £21 from ribble, I think

Another vote for the Conti 4000S. I use them all year round.

Conti 4 Seasons for commuting and winter rising, 4000S on the good bike and for racing. Can use 4000S all year round without a problem but the 4 Seasons are even more durable which is handy when commuting and the weather starts to get a bit grotty.

sorry, perhaps I need to clarify - a few impact punctures - but none due to glass, thorns, stones etc :D

No problems on GP4000s for me, slippery in the wet? What isn't?

4 seasons are a bit too solid for my liking, you'll get better grip with GP4000s
